Hey guys can anyone help me here? I am trying to identify a straight six out of a 78 camaro and figure out what model it is. It was offered to me for free for a project I am working on. I haven't seen it to get any casting numbers. But I am hitting a roadblock trying to google for how to identify the straight sixes of this era but I can't seem to find any info. Can ya'll help?

I know how to tell a 292 apart from the smaller ones, but that doesn't help you much because they were truck only. But the 292's motor mounts are staggered. sorry I'm not more help.

if it is the stock 6 cyl out of a Camaro.
It is a 250 cid chevy 6 cyl. It puts out around 110 high spirited HP. AND a whopping 195 lbs of tire spinning torque.
what more info do you need?
There is an engine code stamped on the block behing the dist. Post it up. It will help to positivly ID what you have.

Well I'll be getting it sometime next week. Until then I don't have any other info on it. From the little I have been able to find it seems like the 250 came with both integrated and non integrated heads and it seems like the 68 camaro would have integrated heads. So I would need to find a non integrated head, intake, exhaust for it. Not extremely concerned with lots of HP just good torque and reliability. Hoping for some good mileage hooked to a 700R4 in a vehicle less than 4000lbs.
