1/2 ton status
I got to thinking about the stuff that has broke on me while street driving and thought I would see what ya'll have had happen.
First, about a year ago, I was making a beer run, and when I went to back out of the parking lot, while turning to the right, I heard a "POP". At first I didn't think anything about it, but when I went to pull off going forward, I couldn't turn to the left. I thought something about the pop then. I got out, and saw that 2 of the 3 studs on left knuckle had broken. I was about 25 miles from my house. (I live in a dry county, so it's a roadtrip to get some cold ones) I called my little brother to come get me. He took me to my house, and I got my 20ft trailer, and me and him went and loaded it up. I had to get the trailer lined up almost perfect so I wouldn't have to attempt to steer. One good thing I got out of this was a set of used knuckles of a 3/4 ton axle, so the draglink (or whatever its called) goes in from the top now.
Second time, I was coming home from some errands, and when I got off the four lane onto the two lane that I live on, and just about the time I got to "cruising speed" (about 60), I heard "BANG", and a bunch of smaller bangs until I got stopped. I looked in the rearview and saw a little smoke. I said "oh sh!t". I finally got it stopped on the shoulder, looked around to see if anybody I knew was around
, then jumped out to see WTF had hapened. When I looked under the truck, I saw my rear driveshaft hanging. Apparently the rear u-joint I had just installed a week earlier had let go. I re-used the u-joint straps
, and I guess they must have worked a little loose, and caused one of the u-joint caps to go AWOL. Upon further investigation, I saw fluid coming form the t-case. It was split clean accross both halves. (I have pics on my PC at home). Well, I called my wife, which just happened to have the day off that day to come get me. She stared asking 21 questions, so I kinda got aggravated and told her that I was on the side of the F'in road, and to just come get my a$$. Well, she finally got there, took her 10 minutes to make a 3 minute drive
, I got my trailer out there, and winched it onto it. Then I had to go to work for 2 weeks while it sat on the trailer. I finally found a rebuilt 208, and when I got home I took it to my mechanic (I don't have the tools/help to replace a t-case on a truck with 8" and 38s). When I got home from work the following time, I went and picked it up. I drove it home, about 8 miles, and stopped for gas. When I got out I saw ATF pouring out from under it. I called my mechanic and he told me to bring it back. A few days later, he called me and said the rear of the transmission was split, too, which is what I kinda figured. When I FINALLY found a rebuilt 350, I ordered it telling the place 3 different times to not go by the VIN, since the original 6.2 and 700R4 had been replaced with a 350/350. Well, when the transmission showed up, I was at work, so my wife took it to the mechanic, and sure enough, they sent a 700. She called them and told them they sent the wrong transmission. They sent out a 350, and shipped the 700 back, and knocked off $100 for my hassle
. After he got the "new" transmission in, it wouldn't shift into 3rd, no matter what. He asked me if I wanted to call the place that I got it from and I said no, they are a bunch of dumba$$es, and I researched and found it was the regulator, so we just swapped the one from my old transmission. Once I got the "kickdown" cable adjusted right, everything's good now........for now.
Anyone else have any "street carnage" they would like to share? Funny thing is, I have yet to break anything on it while wheelin.
Sorry, I didn't mean for it to get so long.
