whats better for pinion yokes, strap style or the u bolt style? or are they 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

U-bolts are better. The straps wear over time and allow the joint to have slop in the yoke.

so its worth buying the yoke that takes u bolts, or can i mod my existing strap style yoke to take u bolts? if i have to buy a new yoke, how many spline yoke does my corporate 10 bolt 3/4 ton diff take? Thanx

Yeah you have to buy the new yoke to do the U-joint style. The stock yoke does not have a flat area on the back side and the holes are different widths for the U-bolt. Honestly if you aren't wheeling the truck hard you can buy replacement straps and will probably suit your needs just fine.
