What are the tranny options for a caprice with around 300 hp? Would a WC T5 handle this much? t56 is kinda pricy, and I would like overdrive. Any experience/opinions with this?

Don't the F-body guys have a lot of problems with breaking t5's? Gm didn't put a T5 behind a 350.

I'm assuming you're talking about a rear wheel drive vechile. If so, think LINCO !!! Then again a Richman 6 speed would be really kewl. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

T5s have problems when they get older with the case getting chewed up, but thats what happens when metal eats into thin aluminum. If you find a good case and rebuild it before something goes bad, they usually hold up. I have gotten T5s to hold up is 10 and 11 second mustangs.

stock t5 is what came in the production vehicles. A WCt5 is an upgrade, but is more $$. If you are buying new then go WCt5, if you were going for sheap, then just use the t5.

Not very long, the stock T-5 is set up to take about 200 HP and 190 LBS of torque. The case flexes too much under major power and grenades itself.

The T-5 that was in the Firebirds and Camaros was a Borg Warner T-5, and it would lunch itself over anything bigger than a 305. The Tremec and WC T-5s are the way to go. The Tremecs can be found in Mustangs(I think) and they can be retrofitted into most musclecars.

In mustang they do, but cant tell you will all the extra weight of your car. Remember mustangs are really light. Most are under 3,000 pounds. Tremecs were found stock in some mustangs, and thats the t5 I was talking about since like I said I have only realy delt with fords in the 5 speeds.

Dan, I really didn't think Mustangs were all that light. I have a few friends that are really into Mustangs and they told me that they were as heavy as my Firebird. They had that CarCraft article where the Foxbody weighed as much as the 70 Nova.

They are light from the factory, and are even easier to lighten. Most are under 3,000 lbs after lghtening them. I think a stock mustang is still only 3200 lbs at most. GTs are the heaviest because of the ground effects. Get a 5.0 mustang LX coupe. Most of them after you strip them of all the extra junk get down to almost 2,700 lbs.

[/ QUOTE ] A friend has a 89 5.0 LX Stang convertable. That thing has been stripped of excess wieght, and the motor has been majorly beefed. Tranny beefed, and lower gears. I'm not a Furd fan, but that is a fun car to drive.
