stretched timing chain?

I went to set my timing and noticed it was about 8 degrees advanced before i started. I set it to 0 degrees and drove it around for awhile. The truck had poor excelleration and hesitated a little bit when i'd start off from a light. My stepdad suggested it was advanced by the previous owner to compensate for a stretched timing chain. i set it back to 8 degrees and it drives better with no hesitations and no poor excelleration. Is there any disadvantages of having my timing advanced that much? The truck has 111,889 miles on it.

It might run a little hotter that way, and gas consumption will be a little higher as well. I had the same problem. I replaced my timing chain (which was stretched) with a new double roller. I compared the old and the new, I hung them on a screwdriver side by side and the old chain hung an inch lower than the new. All is good now.
 
I may be mistaken but shouldn't the timing be set for 8 degrees advance?

Isnt it supposed to be set at 8 degrees BTDC?
isnt anything before 0 Advanced, and anything after is retarded. or is it the other way, damn, you all got me thinking and my brain hurts from the brewskies.
 
it says on the tune up decal 0 degrees. Im only going by the procedure.

Better to go ahead and replace it, if you have never had the headaches of one jumping time, you don't want them...

0 degrees just doesn't sound right to me. My '73 is set at about 14 degrees and runs great. I've had other vehicles that I've went as far as 40 degrees advanced, but never seen anything that ran good at 0. I'd say stick somewhere between 8 and 15 degrees.
 
He has an '88, and it has computer controlled advance. You have to disconnect a wire that disables the computer advance, and then set the timing to 0 degrees. My question is, did you disconnect the wire before you checked and set the timing?

That's right! You need to unplug that computer advance wire. Also, I have an 89 and according to the sticker it should be at 0 degrees BTC. Right now it is at about 4 degrees BTC and it pings a little but runs strong.
