striker problems...

When I went to remove the old striker and it threaded very firm and the nut inside the door frame broke loose. Once I had the striker out the nut fell down towards the rocker panel.

My question is, how do I get inside the panel to fix this? I am thinking of drilling a 3" hole with my hole saw on the inside of the panel to gain access to the back side of the striker, and then weld the hole back in place after I finish fixing it. Anyone have any better ideas?

What i have done that wont help you now is when the old stiker is in place still drill and tap and small hole as close as you can to the old stiker. Then put a screw into it. This will hold the old bolt in place. Then when you remove the old striker the bolt will stay put. I think you might be able to do what you are suggesting to fix your problem. It will most likely work.

I ran into that adjusting mine, and I was going to cut and weld. I thought just for **** and giggles I would take off the interior piece to see if there is a hole already there. There was. Granted I've got a suburban but maybe you might have one. If you don't maybe it would might be better to put the hole inside under the plastic, and not where the enviroment could get to it easier( inside of the weatherstriping, not outside)

Is it closed up behind that also, by the bedside. May hole back there would work, straight across, so you can get socket with an extension.

Maybe find a rubber plug or make a tin cover to screw over the hole,in case you ever need to get at it again??...better than welding it back on and having to cut another hole someday,right??..
