i have been outside all day with an allen wrench trying to tighten the stud that threads into the top cap and it will not move at all, i can crank it either way till the cows come home but it wont move up or down one millimeter, i have tried pulling it out but it wont budge. anybody else do this before? :dunno:

yes the nut is long gone, the cap is also off at this point, im just trying to get the stud threaded in and tight

What exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to remove the sector shaft? If so take the 4 bolts out around the stud & lift the cap.Make sure the steering pointed straight with the pitman arm removed.

i had a second steering box where i broke the case so i took the top and tapped it for hydro assist, i replaced the front cap in a few minutes, took the top one off by removing the nut, the stud came with it for a while but then the nuts was off and i twisted off the stock cap, then when i was trying to replace it with the tapped cap i realised that the stud wasnt moving at all

Once the nut is off doesn't the sector shaft just come out of the top cap? I thought that stud changed the relation of the sector shaft gear to the worm gear. Essentially setting the backlash of the steering box.

If I am wrong you can kick me in the junk. It is late and I am getting my ass kicked by a Verizon cell phone.
