Ok so I've got a ff14bolt with 4:10 gear ratio , also have a Dana 44 with the same ratio.
I was thinking of putting 4:56 gears in the 14 bolt. Should I do the same to the 44 baisicly keep it or find a Dana 60 ? So baisicly not sure if I should run what I have up grade the rear and front axel to 4:56 or find a Dana 60 and match the rear @4:56 Also what will my rpm be 700r4 trans running 35s but possibly going 38s just not sure which route I should take .

4.10 to 4.56 is only 1 step. Most people will say that its not worth re-gearing 2 axles for 1 step. If you find a D60 with 4.56s and then it becomes worth it to make the rear match the front, but why mess with it right now?

At 65 mph: 700r4-2wd-4.10-38" tires = 1659 rpm.
At 65 mph: 700r4-2wd-4.10-35" tires = 1812 rpm

At 65 mph: 700r4-2wd-4.56-38" tires = 1843 rpm
At 65 mph: 700r4-2wd-4.56-35" tires = 2014 rpm

At 65 mph: 700r4-2wd-5.13-38" tires = 2074 rpm
At 65 mph: 700r4-2wd-5.13-35" tires = 2265 rpm

You are maybe a little low with 4.10/38's, but other than that those numbers are all in the "perfect" zone for highway cruising speed. Added the 5.13's option if you do decide to go that route.

You got to decide on 35s or 38s and how you're gonna use the truck. I didn't neeeeeeeeeed a dana 60 until I got bit by the rock crawling bug. Until then a set of 4.56 geared half tons worked great.
I'd suggest looking into 5.13 if you're going to gear both axles with plans for bigger tires later.

38's and 4.10's suck.

Trust me. You need 4.56's with the 35's, and at least 4.88's with the 38's, probably 5.13's.

It isn't just the diameter of the tire to think about, it is also the weight.

Sounds good but what is it like on the freeway I like to throw the kids in the truck and go for a ride or take it camping ?

if you have over drive and 35 or bigger tires it tends to be best to go 5.13 .

say you have 38" tires and 70mph speed with 700r4 overdrive trans.

4.10 gear = 1776 rpm
5.13 gear = 2223 rpm .

sbc sweet spot is in the 2k rpm range for the most part .

play with this a bit . http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html
Thanks man do you guys like the 44 or is it crap ?

That depends on the usage of the truck. If rocks and 38's are in the future you will probably break the 44.
For 35's it will live for a good while.

I'm with these guys, if you are gearing it go with 5.13's. Worked out good for me with 37's

I ran 4.88s and 38" tires with a 10 bolt and 12 bolt. Worked well for road and mud. If your planning to run rocks or high HP, a 60 front and 5.13s would be a wise investment.

Appreciate the input guys , did more research on 5:13 sounds like it's the way to go thanks !

With the prices of Dana 60s these days, unless you can find one for a steal I'd look at just getting one from a supplier who professionally rebuilds them.

By the time you buy one of the Craigslist Dana 60s that are commonly pulling $1000-$1200 and re-gear with a locker plus any additional parts you may need to replace you will be close to the price of one that shows up at your door ready to bolt in.

Really your offended come on man lol . Have a good day.

the most important part of this equation is the 700r4..... you don't want that thing hunting for OD... quick way to kill it..... that's why 5:13's are often the choice....
