hey
i just swapped in a SM465/NP205 combo and when i shift the t-case into 4hi or 4lo and use it for a while it is UNBELIEVABLY hard to shift it out and back into 2wd. some times it shifts out normally, but not too often. whats goin on?-thanks

You probably have the tranny in gear, putting a load on the whole drivetrain. Simply throw the tranny in nuetral and then shift the t-case. OR: You may sometimes need to roll back a little to disengage everything. This takes the load off everything while it's all in the forward motion. If you take some slack out in the backwards motion, it will allow some 'play' to allow the shifting.

well i have tried it in gear and in neutral, doesnt make a difference. i will try the rolling back thing. does the 205 act that much different than my old 208? my 208 shifted with ease? thanks again

Yep, welcome to the NP 205 gym program. In a couple of months and you'll have a right bicept like a prize fighter!

shift it while moving but with no torque on it.

still a jerk though

The Detroit in the back for some reason has something to do with it. A locked rear only seems to make it worse. Try what MJ said and also try rocking the truck back and forth.

I have just about perfected the "205 shift on the fly". When I am in 4lo and need 4hi or 2wd I just keep rolling, shift into N (with the trans), shift the 205, and go back into D (with the trans).

When I first got the truck I tried alot of ways to get it to shift (including putting my foot on the lever and pushing!) but this way was the only way that worked every time. It is also fast and better than your friends almost rear ending you because you stopped on the trail to shift!

Yep I just stab the clutch and it slides right into whatever I want.

thanks for all the help guys, i was getting worried i swapped in a broken 205, but i guess its all normal. thanks again

It is one of the tradeoffs. Strength vs ease of use. I will go with strength every time.

It is just as much fun to build it as it is to bash it

I was taught that you can shift the 205 either stopped in N or rolling in gear with no throttle and by "yanking it like a man".

Works for me.
