Hello all, figured I would start a thread to keep all of my questions and updates in one place as this is my first 4x4, so I'm sure there will be a lot of them.

First things first, I got all of the carpet ripped out of the rear (since the PO did a horrible job piecing it together and to inspect for cancer) and I was wandering if somebody could tell me what some bolts are for? They are next to the right fender under the rear seat in the bed. Just behind the seat belt. I would include a picture, but I don't have enough posts yet. Once I get the bed all sanded down I will be doing a roll on bed liner. I just wanted to see if I was missing something, or if I can just take them out. Thanks for the help everybody!

Welcome to CK5, if you post 3 more times in your own thread, you will have met the 5 post minimum. I highly recommend payin the $25 membership fee. You will save more than that in repair costs by gaining the knowledge that guys here on the board have to share. Plus the threads are pretty boring when you can't see all the pics. It was money well spent!!! I believe the bolts you are referring to literally bolt the floor sections together... Post a few more times and just so you know...
:sign6:

We love pics!!!

Thanks Smier! Yeah, I plan on getting the membership as soon as my GI Bill money kicks in for this school term. And you are right, the threads on this site would be so much better with visuals, haha.

2 more!

Is that from alongside the rear wheel wells? Almost too close to tell. Is that brownish junk leftover glue and insulation from the carpets? What ever you do, make sure you clean up any rust before you put any type of bedliner on there.

Mine had a little (what appeared to be) hydraulic rod for the rear seat mounted somewhere like that. I removed it.

Good call, that is where the strut to hold the rear seat up when folded would mount.

Awesome, thanks for the help everybody. :waytogo: I guess I'll just get the bolts cleaned up and tightened them down like stated. And yes, that is all glue and leftover pieces of the carpet that you see. I have a couple wire wheels to get the area prepped for paint. I was planning on taking it all down to bare metal before rolling on the liner.

That glue sucks. I used a gasket scraper and a rubber mallet.

Looks like a big area for wire wheels. Check out Abrasivetrader in the vendor section, for some coating removal disks....

Never used them, but think they could make quick work of that without removing metal.

I did the same thing to my truck, except mine is a Suburban. I primed it, bedlined it, installed Dynomat, and then on top used some aluminized insulation I got from Home Depot or somewhere. After installing the new carpet with the jute padding, its so much better than the factory setup. I bedlined the doors and the ceiling as well. And insulated it plus dynomat on them as well. Its SO much quieter and it stays cooler in the summer and holds heat much better in the winter, plus its sooooooo much quieter.

Wow, I'm surprised that thing is not sound proof! Sounds like a great setup, though. I was thinking about rolling on for the headliner too, but I will just take it one step at a time. The only reason I was taking mine down to bare metal is I was reading around on here and some folks were saying that the roll on bed liner would start to peal up if there was any paint under it. I guess if primer is working good for you guys then I will just give that a shot. I'll just concentrate on getting all the glue and the couple of areas with rust up then prime and roll it. And dhcomp, I'll check out that stuff you are talking about and if the glue proves to be to much for the wire wheel then I will pick some up. Thanks to all for the input!

Yes it will peel on paint if you dont scuff it up first. Some decent grit sandpaper and it sticks fine.

Alright, so I finally get the Herculiner all finished up and curing. I ended up using the wire wheel to get all of the carpet glue up. It worked out great, just freakin' time consuming. It took me about 6 hours to get all of the glue off and the paint prepped for primer. I was extremely happy to find ZERO rust in the whole bed except for a couple bolt heads that I got cleaned up. Afterwards, I filled some random screw holes and the old spare tire mount holes with Bondo to keep the water and mud out, and laid down a coat of Rust-Oleum auto primer. Then FINALLY came the bed liner. Ended up getting three coats out of the can with about 8 hours of cure time in-between. I am extremely happy with the results! If I could do it over again I wouldn't buy the Herculiner kit because the brushes and rollers they include are total crap and I ended up not using them. Ended up just using some 4" paint brushes from wally world. All-in-all, I have about $115 into it. Not bad if you ask me!

I also got some new seat belts for the rear bench on order from AndoAuto since one of the metal belt straps bolted to the floor was broken and gone. Next week I will be ordering it a new soft top. If anybody in my area wants my old top top they can have it for free. Just let me know before I haul it off to the junkyard. I will post up when my new top comes in and the old one becomes available. It's starting to come together slowly but surely!
