Studded tires

With winter time fastly approaching, and the fact that I will most likely be driving my 2wd 89 f150 again this winter, I have been considering getting tires with studs in them for the rear to help on the slick roads here.

I am not trying to be a bitch about the winter, normally I wouldnt worry, but this damn truck is barely controlable when it rains... let alone ice and snow. Adding weight helps, but theres only so much that can be added to a half ton without going crazy.

Does anybody have any good info on these, or where to acquire them? Tirerack.com has some, but Ive never heard much about them in Mn before

They are really damn common in Alaska. Every vehicle I have ever driven up there runs triple studs (three studs in every shoulder lug) in the winter, even our work trucks (and we pinched pennies ridiculously with that business).

Can't help ya with where to get them though...every tire shop in AK does studding and you pretty much have to get an appointment during the season changes because they're so busy.

I've got studded BFG Commercials on my plow truck up there. Mostly because they were one of the cheapest 235/85s that was a decent tire, but they are really damn good winter tires.

I have this set for the K5. They are awesome on the highway when its nasty and even in the deep stuff they work great. I don't get stuck with them.

I don't know what kind of tires you'r planning on getting studs for,
But a real winter tire like the one DK5 linked to, is much better than a big-lugged MT-tire with studs.
I'd prefer that even if it isn't studded, but it's better with studs as well of course.

Cooper discoverer M+S is another descent winter tires that comes both with and without studs.

And if you go with studs, do it all around, not just in the rear.
You need brakes as well as traction.

A 1000lbs weight on the bed helps as well

these brand/style also work real good for rear wheel drive vehicles.

i had a set on my 92 caprice and never had problems. and few friends have run them and liked them.

cooper is good stuff also.
