Hi i am new to 4 wheel drives, and I have stupid question. My front driverside locking hub is loose, moves in and out. Is this a bearing tightness problem? or something internal in the hub?

Did you attempt to tighten the hex screws on it?
Mine have a bit of endplay on them on both sides (Factory Spicers) maybe 1/8" or so? It's just the plastic "knob" though of course. I just figured it was normal. If one side had play and the other didn't I'd probably worry more.

I was told the man. hubs are floating (on the "O" rings)

I tightened the torx screws on the hub....did nothing.
It's the whole hub that moves not just the plastic nob.
The one on the passenger side is nice ant tight.
I was told that it was a bearing tightness problem, but wanted to find out since you need a special socket.
being a poor college student sucks, can't spend money on stuff that I don't need.

Well if you think you have loose wheel bearings, $20 for the socket, $10 worth of grease seals, and $5 worth of grease is cheap compared to all of that plus $50 worth of wheel bearings.

If just your locking hub is loose and not the whole wheel hub, I can't see how it would be a bearing problem. The only way you'd have a bearing problem is if you could grab onto the wheel while it's jacked up and by pushing in and pulling out on it, get the hub to move around on the spindle.
If just your locking hubs move a bit, don't worry about it. Mine do too. Try popping off the cover (by taking out the six bolts) and make sure you have two retaining clips holding the locking hub body in. One is a large outer retaining ring that goes on the inside diameter of the hub, the other is an external retaining ring that goes on the end of the axleshaft. If those are there, bolt it back up and go...these locking hubs are gonna have some play in them.
If just your locking hubs move a bit, don't worry about it. Mine do too. Just my in-experience with 4WD, I figured something was wrong, since the other one was tight, and I wanted to fix it before it did something really bad

You should be good then. You can generally tell if your wheel bearings are loose.

what brand lockouts are you running?
there are 2 snap rings on most lockouts, one rides on the axle shaft (small external snap ring) and the other on the inside of the wheel bearing hub (large internal snape ring). what you could be seeing is that the large snap ring has fallen out of place, and the lockout is held in place poorly by the small snap ring. this could happen on a warn, milemarker style, not an OEM spicer lockout.
the large internal snap ring holds the mounting ring for the allen head'ed bolts. the bolts tighten the oring between the lockout housing and the wheel hub.
did i run around in circles enough?

on an 87, you most likely have a set of warn hubs and a 10 bolt front axle. i would check that larger internal snap ring. remove the 6 allen head bolts and you should be able to see if there are any problems.
