There's like 12 different colors of this crap. All I want to do is make a gasket. I've used blue before on the front diff and it doesn't seem to be leaking. Got some red anerobic today and it says something about an activator. I thought lack of air activated it? What is best for taking the place of general gaskets? Trans, diffs intake etc.

I use black on everything that isnt in contact with gas. Only thing I use anything different on is I put a light coating of copper RTV on both sides of my header gaskets. Does it help, who knows, but I never have header leaks.

Permatex right stuff in the cheese wiz bottle is what I always use. Stuffs awesome and I'll never use anything else for general gaskets.

X3 from another mechanic. Best stuff I've found yet.

I wouldn't use anaerobic for a diff cover.
Ultra Black or right stuff good for covers...like others said

I too,am confused when I view the gasket maker aisles in parts stores now...back when I sold the stuff, there was about 4 different ones--the "original" semi-transparent blue stuff,"Ultra-Blue" that supposedly worked the best under constant exposure to oil, the "Ultra-HI-Temp" orange stuff good for 650 degrees, and they just introduced "Ultra-Copper" when I was leaving the parts counters...
Now they have Ultra-Black,Grey,"The Right Stuff" and probably a half dozen others...

I will be needing some soom to seal up the oil pan to engine on my 6.2,and dont really know which one is "best" for that purpose..my friend reccomends the black stuff, but he doesn't use the "Right Stuff" because he doesn't like the presurized cans it comes in,he's got more than one that refused to release anything and the store wouldn't refund him his money...

I was rather shocked to see most of the toothpaste sized tubes of this stuff now sell for 8 to 12 bucks,it was 2.99 last time I used any!....yes,its been that long..what sucks is I have two tubes of "Ultra-Blue",still unopened in the blister packs from the 90's that are hard as granite,I guess it eventually hardens even in the tube if its never been opened..

We use the Ultra Black for all applications requiring silicone as a gasket and have never been disappointed by it's performance.

Follow the instructions on leaving a tail of product out of teh top of the bottle, and the nozzel when done. You can rip the "plugs" out with pliers next time around, and get back to work. No dried out bottles.

I've used blue and orange for water blocking gaskets. Use black for any non pressure oil seals. Copper and red on exhaust and I'm not sure about the right stuff. Never used it. I don't like the pressure deal either. I'm used to the tubes but have heard nothing but good about it so far. Generally I stick to orange and black for most seals on my truck that require it. One of them is good for sensors as well. I believe the regular blue not ultra blue.
http://www.permatex.com/product-selector for a guide on what products they suggest you use on different parts to seal.

lots of newer gaskets actualy say no sealer or the gasket will not seal . as the oil hitting it swells them up to form a tight seal .

seen a few leaks from this kind of miss done work .
