Stupid Wheel Bearing Adjustment

Well, I followed the directions to a 't'. It seemed loose at first when I tightened the inner lock nut to 35ft/lb and backed it off as directed, but then when I installed the lock ring and torqued the outer lock nut to 160+, the whole assembly tightened up. It feels really good now. Cool!

My first CK5 guided fix of many!!!

Yeah its got that trick. That 160 ft. lbs. draws-up all the threads so the cone is in farther than before the torque. So you keep trying backing it out one pin hole at a time.
If it seems to want to get the best adjustment between two holes on the ring, you can flip the ring over to get half clicks.:wink1:
Best of all worlds is if you can check from hot/driving. Pull in, jack up the wheel and tug top to bottom and it should be net no slop, but not scary hot at the hub. IR thermometer works pretty good here.

Glad you got yours straightened out. These things are pretty persnickety.

I'm pretty sure mine was worse on the LH side because of the spindle was damaged. The LH rear axle shaft was bent on the truck when I got it too, so somebody probably hit a curb or something on the LH side hard enough to screw up the front spindle and the rear axle shaft.

I think the main lesson to take away from this is DON'T LET 4WPW TURN A BOLT ON YOUR TRUCK. Do some searching of 4WPW here. They've got a horrible rep for things just like you mentioned. I'd also call up there and complain about their installation job and how many hours you spent correcting their mistake. See if you can get some in-store credit or something.

Not to make you lose sleep, but I wonder how good a job they did setting up the gears if they screwed up the wheel bearing adjustment so bad?

XXX2222. I bought my last set of wheels/tires there, take out even; I didn't want them even touching my "junk". That wasn't protection enough. one and a half wheels balanced, out of five. Figure these guys couldn't get a real job so they finally drain to 4WPs. :doah:

It's ok. I have only had 4WPW do 2 things for me- gears in my 94 and gears in the 88. I have to admit, the 94 did just fine for the years that I owned it- no whine, clanks, clunks or otherwise. Other then the bearings, the 88 has been good for 100 miles since the install. No whine or anything weird to report.

4WPW is just like any other chain- some stores are better then others and within the store some mechanics are better then others. I remember that there was a Burger King by my old house that I couldn't stand- it was dirty and the food was disgusting, but I still liked Burger King and would eat at other ones.

My experience with them has been overall good, but that opinion is subject to change! I am taking all of our toys to an OHV area this weekend, so we'll see how it does. :o
