in that how thing work link it said the reaction that made the plasma also creates the sheilding gas around the plasma, so I dont think you need it but im not 100% sure.
I have used the old style plasma cutters that use shielding gas , they are nasty , really bad smoke and fumes are produced compared to the comp. air ones I use now
