I have a1994 1500 suburban 4x4 with ABS. It just started doing weird thing....I hear the ABS pump working when not sliding. And does it under normal load. Light load. And is kinda hard to stop.....could it be the pump?

sounds like the pump is working, I would say a sensor somewhere is acting up, sending a false signal.

My 97 was doin a similar thing, it got to where you would hit the brakes and the abs would pulse so quick it wouldnt stop. I just unplugged one of the abs sensors and have never had a problem since.

I've taken a brake class where they talked about ABS on Suburbans... they didn't have much good to say, but you can pull the fuse. That was the "fix" they talked about.

I haven't seen one in person, but I'm guessing if it only has rear wheel abs, the sensor is in the diff (in the pumpkin). If it's front & rear, there should be a sensor at each front wheel. It might be hard to do, but there is a "tone wheel" at each hub with teeth, and the sensor nearby. Check to make sure the teeth are clean, as they said in the class that dirty teeth can contribute to ABS issues.

Good luck. If all else fails pull the fuse ;)

The rear-wheel-only ABS was 1990ish-1991, and was fairly bad, yes. I think the 1992+ have a decidedly more modern system.

Not sure if it's different from Burbs to pick-ups, but my '94 Silverado is only rear ABS... never had any problems with that so far.

you can pull the fuse to bypass and shutoff the abs.if it fixes it,it may be a sensor that is not workin properly.

Your problem is common.A code check should turn up nothing because the system does not see a problem. Here's what you do.Carefully remove both front sensors from the hubs.Stick some paper in the holes and clean the rust build up off the sensor mounting surface with a file or sanding disk but don't remove solid metal just rust.Remove the paper after blowing it off then clean and lube the sensors before reinstalling them.Good to go.
