I haven't pulled the headliner out yet, but am working everything out in my head for building the roof rack. Trying to decide on the best way to mount it. What have you guys done?

If I remember right, the factory roof rack screws into the roof (obviously), but when you take the headliner down you will see reinforcement bars sorta like a cheap cage, and they screw into them. If you dont go into them, any weight on the rack will dimple the roof and warp yo stuff.

Anyone use rivet nuts for attaching to sheet metal?

I'm thinking using the Self Sealing (Closed End) ones at the bottom of the page here. 3-4 5/16" down each side should do it. I don't want to worry about leaks and I don't want to have to pull the headliner if I take it off. I am worried about caving in the roof though.

looks like that's what the factory used on the rack & rear spoiler...:waytogo:

just center the feet for the rack over the roof ribs to spread the weight as mentioned above.

The Con-fer rack on my Suburban is mounted with the rubber expansion nuts. NO LEAKS, and the load is spread plenty (4 mounting feet per side) to carry anything I can put up there. Home Depot & Lowe's sells them...
