Wondering what kind of mileage ya'll are getting in the suburbans. The new 4wd one I got the PO said he got about 10-12 mpg it is a 350 with Qjet. I planned to swap it to TBI but have also thought of a TPI system, or a mild 454 with either TBI or qjet. will be using the 700r4, with 3.42 gears and 31 or 33 inch tires. Plans are for this to be a DD and occaisional tow rig.

91 burb TBI/700R4/3.73/33's 10 mpg everywhere, didn't seemto matter how I drove it. I would strongly urge you to consider going to a deeper gear.... burbs are heavy

83 burb, 454/400/208 Qjet, 3.73's, 32 in tire
10 MPG in mixed city/hwy driving

Seems like I am going to be looking at around 10-12 mpg reguardless from the above posts, so would it be a good idea to go with a 454 TBI and some 3.73 gears? Wouldn't going to deeper gears hurt the mileage?

90 with a 350 TBI/TH400/4.10's/37's and I get 10 or so. The mileage on a 9000lb truck with oversized tires is just going to suck.

it depends. if you're going to do mostly highway driving, then yes, it will hurt fuel economy. if you're only doing city driving, deeper gears will help because you won't have to use as much fuel to get up and going as fast as you'll probably want to.

If you're running a Burb with 454, ignore the gas gauge. With 700R4 (OD) I'd say 4.10s. Towing, 14Bff. IMHO.:D

I realize that the mileage isn't going to hit the 20s or anything, just wondering what the general average was. And if it is about the same for the 454 then maybe I could rebuild the one I have to put in the burb.

I drive about 90 miles a day mostly highway so would a gear swap be a good idea, or should I leave the taller gears to get a little better mileage?

90 miles a day? Man, I'd get a cheap POS 60's VW beetle.:D

90 miles huh? ouch!
I have a 60 mile roundtrip, about half is hwy, and half is city.
I was driving the burb while my trooper was broken, and I with gas at 3$ per gallon, it was costing me 18$ a day!!!!!!!!
That made the decision to fix the trooper a really easy one.......

Yeah it hurts pretty bad, but I go to school in another town and have some classmates that carpool with me that help pay for gas. On the bright side I only have another year left, then I will have a company vehicle to DD and the Burb wil mainly be for weekends and vacations. I have a 16ft camper trailer that weighs about 5k that I take my son camping in, and sometimes haul some project cars around town for friends thats about all the towing I do. But I LOVED the power my 454 crewcab had and it got about 8mpg and weighed in at 8300lbs with the tool box and all three tanks full (2 20 gal saddles and a 40 gallon burb tank) I expect it would be awsome in a burb that is a little lighter.

that's my problem. my gearing works great for the highway, which we have plenty of around here, but my gearing sucks for city. i actually got better mpg on a 400 mile round-trip with about 20 hours of wheeling than i do on a normal tank of city driving. 11.5 on the trip, 9.5 city. i've had very few tanks with no offroad miles on them, but when that happens and it's highway, i can squeeze out 13-16mpg. 350/700 not certain on diffs, but i'd guess 3.08.

I am almost tempted to just go with the 454, 3.73 or 4.10s and bite the bullet and buy a gear vendors overdrive.
