i have a 1995 1/2 ton suburban with the 5.7 tbi in it. it has 270k original miles.

my sister was on her way to work and while getting onto the free way it decided to die. It cranks but wont turn over. I made sure it was wasn't out of gas, tried spraying starting fluid down in and still nothing. guessing not getting any spark?

Please Help!

270K is some miles on that motor! Don't spray starting fluid down the TBI anymore. That would have solved a no fuel issue, but normally, i try not to use starting fluid on injected motors.

Test for spark, and report back.

Wouldn't hurt to tap on teh bottom of the tank with a hammer, and then try and start. I'm guessing either spark or fuel pump...but if it didn't "try" to start on the starting fluid, i'm guessing no spark.

If it died while running it may be fuel or spark or 270,000 miles it just broke. Could be timing chain, let me know if you need some help working graves tnight and tomorrow night so pretty free during the day.

If it was fuel the starting fluid would have done something to it i would think. I vote ignition module or coil but im a little ignorant to injection systems and i only vote those because i've experienced similair issues on my k5 where i had to replace both.

Sounds like no spark. Try pulling off the distributer cap, and turning the motor over. If the rotor doesn't spin, then the timing chain probably broke. Could also be a coil, or ignition module. At 270k pretty much anything is possible :doah:.

i will be checking it out this weekend. thanks for all the advise i really need it, especially with all the tbi stuff. (also checked the odometer it has 267,000 miles, my bad.)

Has anybody ever checked the coil and ignition module with a ohmmeter? i was looking through the haynes book and i think it said something about that.

thanks for the offer. I will tinker around with it for a while and see what i can find, but if i cant figure it out i will take you up on that offer.

Ignition modules can "supposedly" be checked at places like Autozone, I have heard of false readings from time to time though, coil packs can only check the continuity, will not be able to tell you if it's generating the required boost in power output.
