Has anyone installed or created a full lenght roll cage for a suburban that still allows back seat riders? if seen some pics but no details. Im trying to think of how i can make one but other than buying 2 or so cages from jegs and buying the rest of the pipe im kinda lost. Anyone have an exo cage on there burb?

Unless you have a third row seat you are trying to protect, a blazer family cage would work. Anymore cage than that would just be extra wieght(unless you are trying to cover the 3rd row seat)

Think blazer family cage but longer if you just set on a full length cage.

Ive thought about that too. Im looking for a full length roll cage ive thought about buying a truck/blazer cage and modifying it to my burban. I wont have the third seat in there but i will have stuff back there i want to keep in tact. there was a thread where someone did put a cage in a burban but it only went back to the backseat and ran to the frame thru the wheel wells. Would it be better to buy the tube and do it myself or buy like a prefabbed one? I would like to make my own since i also want an exo cage on the outside and i figure i can tie the two together somehow ( might take a 6 pack) but it should work. If i do it myself what kind of tubing should i use? ive noticed people saying that the dom tube is great but expensive.

IMO, you are better off buying the tube yourself and making the cage you want. The tubing will cost quite a bit ($5-800 probably) and you'll need a bender (~$300). The norm for cages in a fullsize 1.75" .120" wall tubing.

DOM tubing is cold rolled (work hardened) and can be as much as 75% stronger than HREW tubing, pipe is weaker than both. It all depends on the grade of the steel though, there are many grades of DOM and HREW tubing.

If I were putting a cage in a Suburban, I would probably use HREW. DOM will be stronger but how many times could you roll the 'Burb before you can't really wheel it anymore? If you feel like dropping the coin on DOM it will make a stronger cage but IMO HREW will keep everyone safe in all but the worst rolls.

Most of my chassis is DOM but I plan for it to be reusable after many flops.

If you make your own cage, don't use .120" wall DOM tubing everywhere. For pieces that won't contact rocks or the roof (like gussets, for instance) use .090" wall HREW tubing. It will make a lighter, cheaper cage and the tubing will still be plenty strong (since the thinner wall won't be subject to denting by contact with rocks).

I want to see where this goes. Need to do axles and a winch first, but I want a good picture in mind for my own project ina couple years.:D

I'm gonna need to build one too for my '75. I want to cut the top off of the cargo area, but I won't do it until I can put in a cage. I still want it to be safe in a rollover. Now I need to find a bender to borrow in the Memphis area. ;):D

I got ya covered on a plasma for cuttin the top off but s.o.l. on a bender.

I've got a plasma cutter, mig, and arc welders too, I just need a bender and a 1.75 die......oh, and lotsa tube. :D

Ok, since im currently mad at the burb, painless and myself im just gonna go all out with her for now and see what i can conjure up. Ill be buying a bender come 17th and hopefully some tube so i can start my cage since im stuck on the wiring. Im looking at protools tube bender but i noticed they didnt have a 1.75 die, where's a place that sell's them? Also i looked but i can't find anyplace that sells 1.75" .120" wall tubing. My plan is to jsut buy regular tube from lowe's or someplace like that so i can practice bending it and make a rough design of it since id rather not try to make my first cage using the 1.75 with no experience at bending it.

1.75" .120" wall tubing is pretty common, your shouldn't have too much trouble finding it. All the places I know are up here by Denver.

Call these guys, I've heard they'll deliver if you buy enough tube.

Thx. If i can find a place in denver then i can go pick it up, i have to go to denver usually once a month for the VA anyways.

? on size did you mean dom 1 3/4 tube wall thickness of 1.20 and .095 (0.75 might not be available) those are the most common to use, try calling a sand rail shop or fabrication shop and find out where they get there tube out. They usually have done all the homework on price for you.
i bought 60 feet of 1 3/4 .095 and 40 feet of 2' .095 cost me $367.59 all dom

If you can pick it up in Denver, K&K surplus is the place to get it. Call around for prices first but they've always been the cheapest IME.
