Suburban Trivia

There, fixed it for you. There were four different sized V6 engines that were available and they were the 305, 351, 401, and the 478 V6.

How about that 702 V12?

Not all of those V6's were available in light duty trucks though. The 305 was the only one from 1960-65. In 1966 GMC started offering the 351E in the light duty trucks. The larger V6 engines were for medium to heavy duty trucks above 1.5 tons.

Yeah, they definitely could be huge...but generally the pick-ups got the 305. That is already big for a V6. The V-12 was damn cool...

They originally had two distributors since the thing was literally designed as two V6's end to end. Looks like someone has those plugged off and added an upgraded ignition system.

That's the "Thunder V-12". Tons of modernizing, and changes to make it much more modern and hot rod friendly. 450 hp at 4500 rpm, torque is somewhere around 1000 ft lbs between 2000 and 3000 rpm. There dyno couldn't hold it back and get accurate numbers.

They will sell you a turn key version for $18K. not bad when you realize how rare those motors are, and the work done to turn it into a turn key engine you could conceivably drop into a hot rod.

Stock power in 1960 was 275 hp, and 630 ft lbs (just off idle. red line was governed at 2400 rpm

I saw the Pontiac "Corvette" today...it was called the Pontiac Solstice...saw one today...thought it was a vette from behind...

Some early GMC's had the 270 and 302 straight sixes, that couldn't be had in a Chevrolet too...also some of the 57-59 GMC's had Pontiac 337 V8's and a few also could be had with a 322 Buick Nailhead and a Hydramatic 4 spd automatic..not sure if the Suburbans could be had with those drivetrains or not though..never seen one yet..
