Hello everyone. I am new here but I've been reading the forum for a while now. I recently purchased my second K5. It's a 1987. I previously had a 1991, which I sold in order to get a Jeep Wrangler TJ. I later realized my mistake and sold the TJ.

I will be doing some interior work soon. I have seen photos where some of you have placed a subwoofer in the side panel near the rear of the vehicle. I haven't taken my panel off yet, but is there room enough to install a standard 10" or 12" subwoofer or are you guys using shallow mount subs? I want to add bass but I don't want to give up much cargo space. What's the maximum mounting depth subs I should be looking at?

I had 10’s in my side panels and they stuck out a bit and were shallow mounts. I removed them and just added smaller ones in the doors.

If you have any fab skills and access to a welder you could make more room for the magnet by recessing a hole in the inner side panel and welding in a box that extends to the outer quarter panel. You should be able to gain a few inches that way. Probably a little more work than you’re willing to do though.

I can't remember exactly, but I used a low profile sub from Tang Band in each rear panel. The inner rear panel is not as rigid as a "real" sub box, but for me, I gave up on losing interior space for cabinet volume, so I settled for whatever could be packaged in the side panels. The performance depends a ton on how rigid the baffles are, the sealing and how much damping you can give to the sheet metal.

I built a set of sealed boxes for 10” subs that bolted to the top top of the rear wheel wells. I had to remove the arm rests for the rear seats but it worked out really well.

Unfortunately I don’t have pictures as I sold that rig a while ago.
