ok. so i feel retarded and inadequate as a man.

how the hell do you get the center pin out of a gov-loc carrier in a 14 bolt semi float axle???????

i popped the cover in the yard, made a mess, removed the lock screw from the carrier and that darned thing wouldnt budge. I even put an impact socket against it and hit it "gently" with a hammer.

I know that center pin needs to come out, in order to remove the "block" from the spider gears, in order to push in the axles and remove the C-clips so i can pull out the axleshafts and take off the parking brake assemblies.

very frustrated at this point :mad:

EDIT - oh and i dont think i broke the lock screw in the center pin. I did use the hammer to tap the wrench to pop the screw free, but i didnt feel or hear a snap, and the screw slowly slid loose under resistance, and then unscrewed. Although.... if memory serves that is a very long screw... and i think maybe the one that i pulled out was less than an inch long. so maybe i did break it :(. If thats the case, what are my options?
 
did all the pin come out?

vary comon broken pins and only part of it comes out. :doah:

you didnt break it. thay break them by them selfs.

and time to cut the cross out. or possible with a pic spin the rest out the end. as its 1 thread or so that hangs in there.
 
well crap weasles.... i guess ill go back friday morning, i dont have to be into work till 12pm, so if i go in early enough i should be able to spend a few hours trying to get that ruddy thing out.

maybe try some easy outs? although not a great angle to get at it with a power drill, ill have to see if i have a pick handy,

i just dont want the guy at the yard to charge me for the whole axle because of this damned little screw. :mad: he already seemed kinda miffed that i took apart two different axles for parts :rolleyes:.

hmmm... i wonder...... maybe some JB weld on the end of a spare #2 screwdriver tip? stick it in and up against the remainder of the retaining bolt, let it sit long enough to set up, and then unscrew the remainder..... think that would work?
 
Sounds like the pin did break on you. That screw should have threads near the head and then a lond shank that finally tapers down to a smaller diameter where it goes into the cross pin. There is a removal tool for this purpose (i have one in my tool box) it's really nothing more than a 12" drill bit (1/8" IIRC) and then an allen bolt that is center drilled to act as a guide for the drill bit. You screw the allen bolt in place of the lock screw then use the long drill bit through the allen bolt to guide the drill bit and then drill the pin and remove with the supplied ez-out.

A good friend of mine invented and patented this tool years ago and it was sold on the major tool trucks. My buddy sold the rights and was collecting royalties until he commit suicide several years ago. :(
 
honestly that was on route to being an awesome post, until the ****ty deal at the end. Sorry to hear things went that route brother.

sounds like a pretty smart dude. i can honestly say i dont have that tool, but it would be nice to have in this instance.

I just went to the garage to see what info i could find on it for you. It said Fabbri Associates (Chuck Fabbri was his name) and then gave his address from when he lived here in town (before he killed himself) but i did a quick search and it looks like you can still buy the kit. does this thing need a 90* drill to work? im tryin to remember what kinda angle im lookin at to get at the hole for the retaining pin bolt. is the really long peice of the kit a flexible drill bit or somethin?
 
Just a standard drill is needed. The bit is a bit flexable since it's about 12" long. Just be careful not to break the bit. The drill bit being so long pretty much gives you a straight shot though so it's doubtful you'll need to worry about the bit flexing.

WTF?! I was expecting, "until he anything else". That really sucks.

I really love my semi float 14 bolts. I have not had a problem with the pin yet, but I will take a look at this tool anyways. Had a pin break on a cruiser a year or two back, but was able to unthread it fairly easy with a screwdriver or something...
 
I had a 10bolt where I blew the spiders out the cover :eek1:. this was about 7 years ago. I went to pull that little bolt and it broke.:mad:. well your buddies kit is exactly the same idea I did. I bought a small easyout and a 12" #30 aircraft bit. I took my time, diled a hole in the remaining piece trying to stay straight, put the easyout in there and waalaa, it came out.
