Summit Racing is asking me to email them a photocopy of my license and credit card in order to verify an order that was made through paypal....?

Has anyone else had to do this or is it complete crap, email address looks legit but I am very paranoid about this and not really convinced.

What do ya'll think?

x2. sounds fishy. Ive made many orders through summit and never heard of such a request.

scam...... why the hell would they want copy of the driver's license anyway. yeah i second that call them and check your bank account.

Complete scam!!! They are going to make copies and ID theft you. DO NOT SEND THEM ANYTHING.

Call Summit.

UPDATE: It's actually legit

I was actually on the phone (called 1-800-230-3030) trying to get a person with them while posting.
Turns out its not a scam, actually legit.........

not that I actually sent them anything though.
I canceled my order, and will pay just using the visa option instead of going through their paypal connection.

One thing the "verification" guy didn't mention that I got three regular customer service reps to tell me was that when you send them these photo copies you need to censor all but the last 4 numbers on the card and the security number on the back of the card. I repeat, the guy that actually works there never mentioned this during my 30 minute interrogation before hanging up the phone.

So for anyone else that ever runs into this problem, thats what you have to do, block out all but the last 4 numbers on your card.

As for me, I don't send **** like that to anyone, I think I'm fixing to go get a prepaid card now that I think about it and use that for all my online purchases ( I don't know why I didn't think of that until just now)

Or you could just get a credit card and not use your Visa debit for online transactions.. it's pretty pain free if someone steals a credit card, at least you aren't out money in your checking account for weeks.

If you are saying it's legit, I can't believe that any company would ask you to send that data over the internet.

I would never do so.

yea, it had something to do with the fact that we moved to an apartment recently. We swapped house for apartment with my wife's grandmother until I graduate in May. It's about a mile from campus so I can stay as late as I need to and still be home in bed within 15 minutes.

Anyways, that was what was explained to me, like I said, I didn't do it, no one else that I have ordered from (about 1500.00 dollars worth) using paypal in the past couple weeks has had a problem.

If it doesn't work on this try I'll just go with jegs, or maybe I'll just go with jegs anyways....

*Be on the lookout for a build thread soon, like I said 1500.00 in the past couple weeks, loooots of parts coming in.

Agreed, I placed an order with Jegs instead, it was a laundry list of parts but I finally got it all together about an hour ago.

Summit is officially on my crap list until I hear of some sort of policy change

I wouldn't put Summit on your crap list because of this. I've ordered a lot of stuff through summit, good prices on good products and their return policy is great. Plus they've never messed up an order and they've gone out of their way to ship stuff from multiple locations to make sure I get it all fast.
I have a debit card with a visa logo that's tied into my checking account. Best way to pay IMO.

They say the best way to make online purchases is with a credit card, and not a debit/check card (visa logo) so your checking account is never compromised. What happened to the OP is good and bad. It would definitly wave a red flag for me, and I wouldn't do it, but at the same time, if their intended purpose is to make absolutely sure you are you, and not a stolen credit card, then that is a good thing. But still, ya wouldn't do it.

I think it has more to do with Paypal than a Visa card. Some venders have been cautious when Paypal is used.....especially if there is a discrepancy with address, unverified address, recent change of address, large dollar purchase, etc.

There have been Paypal accounts that have been hacked so they are just making sure you are who you say you are (and live). I wouldn't think this is a normal procedure though.

Easy solution...don't use PayPal.

I used to use it a lot and still do occasionally but I hate their politics and their fees are getting too high. I use other means whenever possible.

A debit card with the Visa logo has the same benefits as a Visa credit card.

I hired a company to do a service and used my Visa debit card...they did not follow through on the service and I requested a refund...they kept ignoring it and would not give me a refund...I contacted Visa and they withdrew that money from them and returned it to my account. They will do that with unauthorized use also, just like a credit card.

Also, something everyone may not know, YOU can set a limit on your debit card for purchases if you are concerned about someone else using your card, authorized or not...of course there is always the $300 per day limit on atm withdrawals.
