Are they worth a crap or not? They seem to have pretty good prices but I don't want to fall sucker to the saying "you get what you pay for". Any thoughts?

I dont personally have one (yet), but my buddy has got one on his cherokee. He pulled a wrangler through half a trail at tellico, and more recently pulled my K5 out of a stuck with it. He hasnt seemed to have any problems with it that i know of. I think i will be getting one for my blazer in the near future.

If you insist on getting a cheap winch, T-Max/Summit winches are the only way to go.

You will regret getting any of the cheap Chinese winches (Milemarker, etc.)

And yes, I realize that T-max winches are primarily made in China as well but they seem to be the exception.

For the record I run a Warn 8274, the same one thats been on the front of the truck for 24 years and it hasn't given me an ounce of trouble other than a bad controller earlier this year (not too bad for almost 25 years of service ;)).

That does seem to be true. I've been doing a lot of searching for a "cheap" winch alternative and I actually haven't found anything bad about the Tmax winches. Most of the searching I've done is on Pirate, local board, and here.

I do believe some of it comes down to anticipated use, kinda like building the entire truck. With the wheelin I've done this past year I can only think of 1 time a winch would have been needed. In that case I think you can use something like a Tmax.

I was a spectator on an extremely hard trail that 38377k5 & some other CK5ers ran, and every single truck and buggy had to pull cable at least once. If you're doing quite a bit of that type of wheelin, I'd strongly urge you to spend the money on a good Warn or Ramsey winch.

The other thing I figure is if the Tmax or similar winches are cheap enough, try to get the highest rated winch you can. That way you aren't running the winch so close to its limit.
