i have been wanting a parts washer for my garage and didnt want a cheep china crap box. so i got the idea of why not try and match it to my tool box.

so i started looking on craigslist for a stainless steel sink. well few weeks ago i found one. brand new never installed single bay 24"x24" square by 13" deep. got the sucker for 45 min each way drive and 50 bucks. :eek1:

well i stoped at the hardware store and got a drain basket with screw lock down cup so i can soak parts if need be. when i installed the basket i used permatex form-a-gasket much thicker than rtv. and once cured its almost like concrete and no leaks as of yet. then i used a old shower nozzle from a kitchen sink setup for 1 outlet and reg rubber hose 3/8 size and going to add a flow threw parts washer brush.

also got a extra remote spin on filter setup from a tranny kit. going to use this to filter the daily junk out of the fluid so it lasts longer. and even got a magnet thats 1/2 round to attatch to the filter to pull any metal from the fluid.

then for a pump i have a few of these old school bendix 12 volt pumps and some are setup in pairs for 2x the flow rate. and thay do around 3.5-4.5 psi of pressure. also thay have there own screen inside the sucktion ends to keep crap from going threw the pumps.

for now i am using a single pump and no filter with a 5 gal purple power bucket under the sink and 4 gal of diesel fuel in it. had to clean some parts i was saving from some scrap axles and didnt wana store them all nasty .

but to give you a idea on the size and capacity of this thing here is a few pics. there is 4 14ff hubs and a 14ff carier half and a 2.5 gal purple power jug cut down for a soaker tray all in the sink and still room to spare.

in the end i wana build a little taller setup on a square frame that will have wheels on it to move around the shop and also hold a 10-12 gal bucket/tank under the sink. then mabye even a 12 volt battery for when i dont feel like pluging it in to the power station i have it hooked to now. and also going to black spray on bed liner the outsides to give it a little sound deadener efect as the thing is a little tinny when you work with parts now. and the black will blend with the stainless steel and match my tool box perfectly.

at this point i am at about 100 bucks . plan to have the whole thing done for under 200 all pimped out.

Nice!! I have a big double bay sink like that with the side tables ......... no you got me thinking

the guy had a 2 bay version. i got it also but turned around and sold it to my friend as it was WAY to big for my garage setup at this point. but that would have been super for a masive parts washer. but mabye someday i will have it back. . .

thats correct. no good crapy ultra low sulfer deisel fuel. works fairly good. and on garage journal site the guys say its good for them over 50% that were asked what to use.

Sweet! That's badass. I just wish I had a regular sink with running water to wash my hands.

Thats what I use at work, but we still have Plain old #1 non of that ULSD crap..........well not yet anyways

Ours isn't red, its nice and clear looks almost like Kerosene

That's awesome! Can't wait to see it finished. :thumb:

I have a harbor freight one and wished I would have done something like this. Maybe I will get around to it one day.

I need to make one of these now! I didn't know you could make one so cheap. Now where to put it....

Good job :thumb:

I'll have to keep my eye out for one of those sinks to replace my POS washer I have now. I don't know why I didn't think of using diesel. I bought 5 gals of solvent a month or so ago......at 8 friggin dollars a gallon!:eek1:

guy on other site said mineral spirets. works good clear and lot less oder for inshop use.
Thanks for the that idea, I have just a cheapy HF unit, but it works well for what I need, but the solvent is the one thing I haven't been able to get right.

I believe diesel has a higher flash point than mineral spirits, so you may want to look in to that if you're "bending" the rules on flammables.

Does anyone know of anything non-flammable like Purple Power or something that works and is affordable? I just run diesel in mine based on my experience with other stuff, but I drain it out and seal it in containers when I'm not using it for a project. The smell is part of it, but mostly I just don't like the idea of sparks near it since I'm only in a two car garage. It seals up well and it's really not that valid of a concern, but I always have that worry in the back of my head that someone knocks it over or something.

Well, currently I am using just some cheap cleaner/degreaser from HF, but it is not recommended for aluminum. Been looking at a few different additives, one is at Amazon, and I am thinking about ordering it and giving it a try.

But with no reviews I am not too sure. I am hesitant to use anything flammable since my washer is in the 2 car attached garage. Mineral spirits show a flash point of 21-55*c, which doesn't sound good in a garage like mine.

Pretty much the same boat as you. I know diesel is like 140*F, so I really shouldn't worry about the fire issue so much. It would be nice to run something less pungent though. I end up leaving my dirty clothes in the garage and washing them separately when I've been cleaning a bunch of parts. I saw a couple people on Pirate mentioning biodiesel having less odor. Might have to look in to that some more.
