Need new tires on my 90 K5. Buying some kind for sure.

Big tax return burning hole in bank account. :woot:

I have 35 12.50 15 inch BFG All Terrains now.

Truck is 90% pavement pounder as its our family wagon and only vehicle, but I want good mud/trail tires for our summertime camping trips with our family of jeep owners who would love to have to tow our big beast out of a puddle.

Need to get around in Denver snow as well.

I really want to just take it down to 4 wheel Parts this weekend and get the Thornbirds on....Will I regret it?

Worried they will drive like crap compared to the BFG or wear out real fast.

Help me out guys?

Yes, you will regret it !

I have never met anyone who had good things to say about thornturds ;), on a pavement pounder, dd, I would strongly recommend against them.
I personally would look at some BFG KM2's, or some swamper TRXUS's or even a Wrangler MTR, something radial will give you much better wear, and ride.

Thornbirds are junk. I'd look at BFG M/T's or Cooper Discoverer STT for your use.

ick....lol.....I had a set of 33s for years, took a beating, sucked in snow and mud but lasted a real long time. They dry rotted before they wore out. They look cool but id never buy another set. I like my km2s and my super swampers, the km2s worked good in the 27 inches of snow we had and my bias swamper tsl 39s dont wear......and are awesome offroad.

i had the thornbirds on my dd and only got 26k outta them. they do look cool, did not ride very good on the street, but they did great in gumbo mud.

Yup, their only good quality is their looks. Guys around here still buy them, but when the snow comes, they can't get anywhere easily. A radial M/T type is your best bet.

yes, yes you will. the bald 33'' stt's on my old truck out pulled them in the mud

highly recomend the cooper stt, there cheep on ebay (around 900 shipped)

Damn, that's a real bummer. I really wanted some Swampers.

I sure want to end up with something more exciting than my 10th set of BFG's.

What about Mickey Thompson? I think the Baja Claw is the one I liked the looks of.

Anyone that has the time to help me continue to figure this out I would really appreciate it.

I hate trying to decide on the sales room floor.

Well as far as the claws go, a good friend of mine ran them on a F150 he has, 35" radials and they did "ok" off road but since you mentioned snow that's where they were really unimpressive. Maybe the lack of siping or the tread design had something to do with it, but they were more or less useless in the white stuff. Coming for a BFG A/T which I have had good results from in snow I think you would be disapointed by claws, in the snow at least.
I still say a BFG mudd , swamper TRXUS or a goodyear MTR (-based off of the old design, no expierence with the new ones yet) would be the way to go.

What about the SSR's? I had mine for 5+ years and probably close to 15k on them with 40% tread left.

They were a great dual purpose tire IMO.

I ran the Mickey Thompson claw's on my old bronco when i was stationed in Florida and loved them. I ran them in the reverse direction and had great traction in the swamps. They were a bit noisy tho . Not sure how they would do in the snow.
I am running the Cooper discover ST on my 3/4 ton and they do great in the white stuff here in Junction. If you look on clist for the western slope a guy posted a set of 35 claw's on 6 lug rims for $400 a couple days back.

Check out the toyo m/ts, they ride exellent on the road, they are super quite, perform well off road, and have an agressive sidewall.

My buddy has a set of mickey tompson mtzs and loves them too.

I had a set of 35" trxus mts and they were really good in the snow and ice, quiet on the road and were very good on the trail and rocks. I highly recommend those. My m1009 is going to get a set of 35" BFG km2s once I put the lift on. I have heard nothing but good things about them plus I like the looks since they kinda look like a military tire.

One more vote for you will regret it.

If you are not concerned about bias ply or radial why not just get a normal swamper?

Heres a second vote for SSRs they look cool last a decent time on the street and do decent off road, did I mention they look cool?

Plus if you like the wide tire look, you can get them in a 35x14.5 that alone will change the look of your truck

The truxus MT works really really well in almost every situation I have seen them in.

Don't discount the swamper radials either I had a set of 38s that with careful monitoring (checking the tire pressure often and rotating them alot) lasted me 40k and I sold them with decent tread on them.

How about Pitbull radials? They are a bad looking tire and while I have yet to see a radial set in person if they perform anything like the bias versions you will be happy ( except probably in icey conditions they are like alot of other mud tires there).

X2 on the Truxxus MTs .... they are good for all around tires.

I had worn out a set of Mickey Thompson MTZ's and if I didnt go with the Truxxus, I wouldve gone right back to the MTZ.
