Surging on the Highway

Hello All,

I have been lurching on this site for sometime and decided to finally get the membership to take full advantage of this great site.

I just recently got a 84 Suburban 3/4ton with the 6.2L. It has 120,000 miles on it and had been sitting in a barn since 94. Before it was put away it did have the IP rebuilt at around 105,000mi.

To get it runnning I put in a new fuel shutoff solenoid, new GPs, new lift pump and fuel filter. I disconnected the high idle solenoid, but left the cold advanced solenoid hooked up. Upon starting she blows blue smoke for a good minute or two, until it slowly goes away. Idles pretty smooth and accelerates okay....it is a 6.2.

Once on the highway the truck runs good for about 5 minutes or so...(not fully up to temp) Once it gets to temp and cruising at a steady speed (65-70mph) the truck starts surging. What I mean by surging is ~2 seconds at a higher noise frequency the ~1.5 seconds at a lower noise frequency. Many times when it goes to the lower frequency the truck...mainly the dash will shake until it kicks back to the higher frequency. Any ideas of what this could be?

Thanks
Fred

Did you flush out the fuel tank and lines? If it's been sitting since '94 the fuel that was in it is probably junk and varnished up. The easiest thing to do would put another new fuel filter on it and maybe some type of diesel fuel treatment and see what happens. If a new fuel filter does make a difference I would plan on running it for awhile, and then installing another new one after another tank of fuel or so.

I put in a fresh tank of diesel with 2 qts of ATF and some 911 additive. I think I will run through this tank and replace the filter with the new tank and some additive. Has anyone had any issues with the clutch in the torque converter? it seems like if it is accelerating it runs good, but at steady speed is when the surging gets worse. I am wondering if I have 2 bad injectors back to back in the firing order?

If you have a 700R4, it might be the problem but I say the same thing run thru the fuel you have and then refill and see if there is any change.

Truck started running much better with a fresh tank of fuel. I bought a rebuilt set of injectors from accuratediesel and installed them before the thanksgiving road trip and now it runs like a top. I averaged about 19 MPG which I expect will go up since during the trip the rubber end cap on the injector popped off and I was leaking fuel. I still get the water in fuel light that stays on when it is cold and sometimes during accelleration, so I am going to drain the water from the box style filter. If the light comes back on I will just replace the filter.

Where can I find the standyne performace formula additive?

Thanks
Fred

I would highly recommend changing the filter! If the previous tank of fuel was "bad" and you have water in it, then its likely the filter could stand to be changed also.

I don't know about stanadyne, but a cheap one is Power service that you can get from Walmart, and you can feel the difference when you use it, or you can go for the best one I have tried yet: ACES, you can talk to Tom here as "4by4god" I believe, it's not cheap but I believe it's worth it.
ANd yeah change the filter.

So glad to hear you changed the nozzles! Its not the most cost friendly option in your whole scenario, and people here were trying to save you a little money, but if a bad nozzle is not atomizing correctly, and is dripping liquid fuel onto your aluminum pistons, they will not live very long, Its all relative and highly variable scenario, but in my opinion, the nozzles are cheap enough that if there is any doubt to their integrity and you can't get to a pop tester or have someone who can do it for you, replace 'em. Also my '82 k5 has a water drain in the tank, not sure if yours does, but it might be a good idea to check it out. Any old fuel that was residual in the tank probably grew some algae and got really nasty. Glad to hear it got resolved without any "whoops" moments...man I hate those...

how does one go about draining the water in the tank? is there a valve somewhere? sorry i havent done the snooping underneath to check, the blazer has been home since thanksgiving and im back down at school

also, i looked at the ACES site briefly and i am interested, what is the mixture ratio for the diesel additive and how much does the cost break down to per gallon, assuming i will not make a LARGE (meaning no where near what industrial concerns would buy) purchase?

I am using it and I broke down the price per gallon since I use lots of it :o
For the initial clean up cycle it costs 30 cents per gallon, after that it's 15 cents per gallon, that includes the CK5 price discount but no shipping, I buy in quantity and with shipping it's 15.25 cents per gallon.
