I'm putting a cage in my Blazer and am going to add seats. I have two 5yo daughters that ride with me. I'm going to put seats in the back for them, but I'm wondering the legality of kiddos riding in an aftermarket seat (like a PRP preteen or full size seat with booster) on the street. My truck still sees a lot of road time.

aftermarket seats have nothing to do with the law. Here, they must be in a car seat if they are under a certain age and height/weight. If they have to be in a car seat now, then they would be in with aftermarket seats, i see no difference. If they are suppose to be in a car seat and your trying to eliminate it by going aftermarket reg. seats, that isnt going to fly.

They are both in boosters, so car seats aren't so much the problem. I think I am going to end up with either a bench or full size seats so they use their boosters as well, instead of going with the preteen seats.

If ya go fullsize with boosters, you won't have to get new seats later like you would when they get bigger and outgrow the little seats.

I'll post pics later today of what my 5 year old uses. Basically he has his booster seat in my PRP seats and I use the four point harness over him as belts. My truck only came with lap belts since it's a '72 so the PRP, booster and four points is much more than what the factory offered. However, in Cali, being the Commies that they are I still don't know if it is street legal. Stand by for pics later today.

Kota, here are pics of my 5 year old boy in his booster seat. Front PRP and Rear PRP bench. I feel completely confident in his safety with the four point belts.

Perfect, thanks a bunch! I'm going to run 5pts, so the lil critters shouldn't be going anywhere!

I do the same for my 5yr-old, a booster in the PRP seat. Matter of fact looks like the exact same booster as Big Blzn. :D

No problem with legality of the seat with the booster. If somebody wanted to get really nitpicky they could look at whether the harness is DOT approved, which my RCI's are not, but I would hope most LEO's would realize that if its safe for NHRA and the like the kid is probably safe in the 4 or 5 points. Definately safer than just a lap belt!!!!

I have asked the question to numerous LEO's and only gotten a couple of if it isn't DOT approved then I would write you up answers.

But just imagine how funny it would be to make your big friends sit in the back when they can't even squeeze into the seats.:haha:

Nobody ever said they were payed to think. A friend of mine got written up in his Monte Carlo for having a full cage and 5point harnesses. Cop said the dash bar of cage blocked his vision (yeah, of the hood ornament), and that the seat belts weren't DOT. When he took pictures of his car to court with him, the judge threw it out and yelled at the cop for being ridiculous.:haha:
