Hey guys. I got a 96 gmc with the 6.5 turbo diesel. The nv4500 blew front bearing and took a couple gears with it. This was/is a internal slave.
I have a good older style nv4500 with the external slave set up.
I know that the internal slave/ throw out will not work because the front input bearing house is smaller and not tapped for the internal.
My question is the external set up going to work as long as a throw out bearing, clutch an pressure plate are from the same 6.5 of a 1994 or older truck ? I know i have to swap yhe slave n master too. I just do not know if there is any other difference like if flywheel has to be changed too or if its fine… anyone know or has done this before?

No. Its same bolt patterns . Bellhousing and transfer case are same bolt patterns
Just to say out loud, are you thinking of the bell to engine pattern being the same or the trans to bell pattern as what is pointed out above ?
GM made the slave and bolt pattern , amongst others, change in 96 model year - do you have a very early production date truck that might be an exception ?
From everything that I know about the GM and Dodge NVG-4500’s JOSHUAK is correct - verify this before you proceed to save some potential headaches.

but, if you are swapping out the entire set up it shouldn’t matter.
as far as the flywheel and related parts I don’t know - might want to compare part numbers for those components to give you some light on the issue. Tom

Yes, ive actually already installed the tranny. Changed everything out but actually never considered the difference in pressure plate. So put truck back together with the old style external set up but the clutch an pressure plate is for the internal set up. So going to pull it all back apart. But looking to verify everything before it all goes back together again.

In my research when I put the 4500 in my K5 there are different pet numbers for the pressure plate depending on if it is internal or external slave release bearings.

In addition to the PP being different ya’ might want to verify that the flywheel for both applications are the same - could be a thickness variance that would effect the slave and T.O.B. travel.
Hopefully it’s just the PP but like said above verify part numbers ( and superseded numbers as well ) and go from there - good luck ! Tom
