Swap TBI big block for 6.0?

I was looking yesterday and you can get a lq4 with 60xxx miles on it with computer for 1450.00 buy it now. Only thing is shipping might kill the deal for me. But I am really thinking about doing this in my k20.

damn!

when you decide to do sumthin you don't fock around, do you???

good luck!

Yes sir. :saweet:

I have $4500 in tax return coming next week and $3500 in enlistment bonus coming this time next month. Some is going towards engagement/wedding rings, some towards a new power plant for my truck. :)

Well, I like your thinking. explore the options with an open mind, then go from there. I think the 8.1 will be a big improvement over the TBI 454...and for what it appears you can pick it up for I think you're miles ahead over building the 454 up.

i'm gonna add the rest of my opinion. The TBI 454's biggest choke point is heads and FI related. A decent set of 781's or 049's and a cam upgrade and you'd bring the stock numbers up dramatically. Dead stock it has more tq than the 6.0, with better heads and a better cam and (flame suit on) a decent Q-jet the 454 will drop down 450-480 tq without breaking a sweat.

There are two ways to get where you want to be short term, and I think the 454 warmed over a bit with a Q-jet is still gonna get better mileage than the choked TBI version. I also think a slightly warmed over 454 is going to outperform the 6.0 in stockish form.

i'm not against the LS platform, I just really prefer the old BBC.

Thank you. From all the threads that have been posted on 454 vs. (insert newer motor here), it seems everyone is always comparing apples to oranges. People are always talking about stock smog-era 454's and basically calling them worthless boat anchors... I guess no one has ever driven a 454 truck that has had a few simple things done to it. The opinions would be different if so.

I like the LS motors just as much as the next guy, but come on, they aren't THAT much better than the older motors.

I've got alittle experience driving a truck with a slightly tweaked 454. My last 4x4 was an '83 K20 with a 454/465. Had the hotter of the comp cams extreme 4x4 cams, double roller timing chain and full roller rockers. New q-jet carb. Was a great motor and great truck. I think desktop dyno had it at over 500ft-lbs and ~350 or so hp. Nothin wrong with the 454's at all.

That said, nothing wrong with the newer stuff either. Great power numbers right out the box and better driveability to boot. There's also no denying the cool factor of new tech in old school iron. Saying that you've got a 8.1l/496 or LSx motor in your 22yo old truck is a bonus as well. :D

Niiice. I like that 8.1 vortec for some sic reason. bang a centrifugal blower on that baby and let'er rip. I've got one apart in my garage right now as a matter of fact. mine was in a turbocharged natural gas genset though.

Cam swap plus tune to a 5.3 nets you 400 [relieable] hp.Do the same to a 6.0 work the heads, and your at 500hp. Turbocharge a 5.3w/ 150,000 miles on it and get 594hp. All without touching the bottom end.
Weighs 100lbs less than a old small block, almost 200lbs less than a BBC and still achieving the same numbers.
If you had read ANYTHING about these motors, you would retract that statement

I could help with a harness and performance programmed computer. I have to pay EFI Live about $100 for every computer I do a full memory flash to!:eek1: Just about any 96 ~ 2001 L31 Vortec engine harness can be converted to operate a LS engine.

I didn't say they weren't better (but they are uglier:D), but the difference isn't as great as a lot of people make it seem.

You can get an easy reliable 400 hp out of a regular old 350 too. Sure it takes spendy aluminum heads to do it, but the cost involved still can be less than a basic LS swap. Then the weight is more comparable too.

Now when the cost of LS parts start coming down even further than yeah, it will be a no-brainer. In the mean time, there are still good options involving a small block or big block.

couple things I gotta beef about, when guys talk about the 8.1L.

Like the block not being machined or drilled for a distributor......................B.S..

you tell me exactly what you see here. looks like a dizzy hole, with a gear drive on the cam. and look waaay down it goes straight through to the bottom end.

No bull, its an 8100 vortec, says so right on the block, with the dual motormount pattern.

I think the wiring/reprograming aspect scares most people off of this swap. I know it does for me. I'd rather get the carbed manie for the 6.0 and slap a q-jet on it. I posted that a while back and most people thought I was on glue...
