I got a deal on a 1985 m1009, it has a blown diesel engine, It has a good turbo 400 and TC. I am replacing the 700r4 in my 84 k5, any issues about this conversion like driveline issues or torque converter since it is a diesel. also are the axles worth anything on these rigs, they look like the original 10 bolt corporate. I might pick up this rig for 600 bucks, take off what I need and scrap the rest

Being from a diesel the converter will be a lower stall speed and the trans will have lower than optimum shift points. The converter will work if the engine has a stock cam, the shift points can be corrected partially with a gas engine governor swap. If you plow with this rig the lower stall will atually be an advantage. The driveshafts you have now should work as should the crossmember if memory serves correct.

I just did the exact same swap three weeks ago on an 83k10 short bed. The th400/np208 came from a m1008. You need to use the transfer case that came with the th400 because of the different spline count. The diesel torque converter worked fine. The flex plate bolted up fine using another set of mounting holes that were already there. Original drive shafts worked fine. The 700r4 cooling lines hooked up fine also. They had different part numbers so I bought new ones, but ended up using the old cooling lines.

You will need a vacuum line for the th400 and will need to wire up the kick down switch.

Also you need the cross member from the th400 and have to drill new mounting holes in the frame.

The shift points seem perfect to me. I read where some people say they are different for diesel and others say they are the same. I'm running a TBI 350.

The th400/np208 had some kind of gear reduction mechanism screwed in where the speedometer cable goes. Probably for the 4.56 gears in the military truck. I removed that and my speedo appears to be pretty accurate with 3.42 gears in my truck.
