swappin rear axle shafts in a POSI rear end

diesel4me said:
posi rears use a bit different procedure,(dont take the spider gear pin out all the way!--and watch how the "C" clips go in--they fit 2 ways, but only 1 way is correct!!)-but the basics are the same..might be best to have someone who's done it before help,or practice on your "junk" axle until your familiar with doing it..

wait, were you reffering how to do it in a posi?

no--

I was listing how to change a non posi axle!--only said "posi's are different" to warn you that the "C" clips MUST be installed correctly,or it'll go a few miles, and they can come off,or get chewed up in the gears!(and let the axle and tire come out!):eek1: ..you'll need to look in a Chiltons manual or similar book to get the picture of what I'm talking about..its imposible to describe without pictures...

so thats the only way the posi is different?
juts the c clips?you dont need to do anything else different?

..................hmmmm

That must be an Eaton style posi--I haven't seen one like that in a long time!--nor have I pulled axles out of one in a long time!..

I'd go to your local Library and see if they have a Chiltons or other manual with photos showing the proper procedure to R&R the axles..or see if anyone else here has done that kind recently, and knows the exact procedure..if I knew how to post pictures I'd scan the pages from my manual..trying to explain how to do it in words isn't really possible--you need to SEE what to do,not just read it...

All the posi's I have meesed with in recent years are the Gov-Lock or cone clutch style--and the last one I had to pull axles out of was in 1997 in my 82 GMC Cabalaro, when the rotted backing plates let the wheel cylinders do a complete 180...:doah: ..the guy who bought it off me said the rear end "locked up" after 3000 miles,so I'm not so sure if it was ME,or just his abuse that did it in...

hmmm, i`m having alot of trouble trying to find someone that can help me with this, that know the posi....what would ya`ll do?

No, I posted the information so you wouldn't call them.

Just call their tech line and ask them exactly what you've been asking in this thread. If they can help you, they will. If they can't, then they may be able to point you to someone who can.

:D :D well i figured you would call tech for one of "their products"

3. READ IT!--look at PICTURE !!..
4. FIX IT!!...:D

P.S. its 99 degrees out,and the LIBRARY is 50 degrees with the A/C on!...(hint!)...:wink1:

i looked in my chiltons, and in various books, and came up with nothing

well, as long as its been, i actually went out there today to do it (had my buddy to help before he moves in like 2 days) and i get to the part where i take out the bolt for the center pin, so i get it out, and the pin wont budge, and i didnt want to screw around, so all i ended up doin was changing my fluid:mad:  so what now:confused:

Did you pull on the axle shafts real hard to pull them away from the pin? Usually it just slides out. Could try tapping it out with a wooden dowel :dunno:

there was about a 1/4 in of threads.....and the rest had none.....

was i supposed to:confused:  that could explain it:o

The pin prevents the axles from moving inward so the C-clips dont come off. There is a chance the axle(s) are resting against the pin. With the vehicle on jackstands and the tires off, pull on the axles hard in the outwards direction. They should move a little. This will make sure they are not resting against the pin. Then try removing the pin. If/when the pin comes out, push the axle shafts in to remove the C-clips.
