OK, so I have a Gov-lock in my wheelin trucks rear end, and I have an Open in my DD/mild trail truck...both are 14bolts w/4.10 gears....now my question is, I'd like to have the gov-loc in my DD truck, since I dont really NEED a locker in it...but my trail truck I do, so I want the open carrier in it so I can get a detroit....now for the question, can I just take the carriers out, remove the ring gears, then swap the carriers?? then put the ring gear back in the truck they came from? and by doing this will I have to re-set up the gears? or should everything line right up??

you will prolly have to reset backlash, and run a pattern, but thats not too bad.

why not just swap axles axles /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I could do axle to axle swap....but really wanted to avoid all that hassle /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

If it were me,I'd swap the entire axle assembly--its easier to remove and install 4 U-bolts,a few brake lines, and E-brake cables, and the rear U-joint,than to try and set up gears while the housing is still in the truck--and might not last anyway--at least it seems easier to me-- /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

You can do it 2 ways. Check the backlash on both axles. Then take everyhting from one (pinion, subcarrier, shim, carrier and ring gear) and put it in the other.

Or

Check backlash. Pull the gov loc out take the ring gear off. take the ring gear you want, put it on the gov loc, and reset the backlash.

hmmm...maybe I'll just wait till Im ready to do 4.88's in my trail truck...then just get an open carrier from somewhere else...since the gears will have to be setup then either way /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

The used gears you take out wont have to be "set up". They already are. Just check the backlash, and reset it to that when you put it back together.
