to an aftermarket one. What`s involved? Did a search, but didn`t find much. Changing of the VSS, or something else?

I believe that you can adapt the an autometer to it.

wait is the aftermarket mechanical or electric?

Since this thread was on topic of using aftermarket elec. speedos, I`m going to bring it back TTT.

I`m using an 89 harness, but instead of the VSS buffer found on an 89 cluster, I`m using the DRAC that is in my 90 cluster, because I`m usign the NP241 w/ elec. speedo, also from my 90. Are there any aftermarket speedometer (electric) that will work with just the speedo wire coming off the DRAC, and not an aftermarket sender?

Basically I`m asking, if I can replace the stock speedo, with an aftermarket by connecting the wire that went to the stock speedo, to the aftermarket one.

TIA!

Check the Autometer guages. They have several that can work with GM senders, although I don't know much about the DRAC, it should still work.

On a semi-related note, anyone know the diameter of the stock speedo? I know I could just measure it, but I am getting lazy in my old age.

I checked the autometers, and they`re looking for something like 16TPR, and like 1600PPM.

There are several I looked at that are designed for connection to GM setups. But they didn't mention the DRAC so I would contact them and see what they say.

Well, they won`t actually mention the DRAC. I believe the DRAC has 3 out puts. 2000PPM, 4000PPM, and something like 128000PPM. So I guess whatever speedo accepts those outputs, would work:confused:

Don't know for certain, but it would be worth it to check with Autometer and they should be able to answer the question.

I spent tonight pricing out all my new gauges so I can rewire the truck when I do the floors, and gauges are about 800. Wow, I am really getting to have expensive tastes.

Autometer

Yeah I just ordered all my guages and I think the total with a sending unit for the speedo and a guage cluster harness from painless was about 700 bucks.. I cant wait to get them and install them..

Mind listing what you purchased? Prices, as well as where you got em?

TIA!

Well, I did a little research, and this is what I found. This is from Autometers site. (an instruction sheet for one of their electric speedos)

I`m not to sure on the out put voltage requirements though:confused:

The speedometer is designed to operate with an electrical speed sender. The speed sender signal range must be between 500 and 400,000

pulses/mile (310 and 248,500 pulses/km). Any speed sender or electronic module that meets the following two conditions can be used:

1. Pulse rate generated is proportional to vehicle speed.

2. Output voltage within the ranges listed below:
• 4 to 16V (Hall effect sender, 3-wire)
• 4 to 120V peak to peak into a 10K ohm load (Sine wave generator, 2-wire)
• 5V Square wave (TTL)
Recommended – Auto Meter Hall effect sender, 3-wire 16 pulses/revolution.

5292 Ford, plug in

Once the speedometer is mounted and wired into the vehicle (see following page), the speedometer should be tested to verify that the electrical

connections are working properly. First, watch the speedometer’s pointer as the power is applied. The pointer should first move to a midrange

position, then down to the zero box on the dial. This action verifies that power is properly connected to the speedometer. The vehicle should be
driven some distance to verify the Vehicle Speed Sender (VSS) is connected properly and that the pointer moves. If the pointer does not move

out of the zero box, verify that the VSS is connected properly.

Guages

Well I had an account at 4wheel parts. I will try my best to list what I ordered. I think I might have screwed up though. Some of the smaller guages i.e. volt, oil some are 2.0625 and some are 2.625 not sure what that really means but we shall see. when I ordered them from 4wheel they sent the order to autometer, so more then likely if they are different sizes I will just send two of them back to autometer and exchange them. Here we go...

Speedo: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT8176.aspx

Tach: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT8181.aspx

Sending Unit for Speedo: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT9095.aspx

Fuel Gauge: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT8830.aspx

Oil Gauge: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT8839.aspx

Volt Meter: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT8881.aspx

Water Temp: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT8909.aspx

Gauge Harness: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT44344.aspx

I would have posted the cost but they have a 10% off deal going on right now...

That is what I ordered. I will let you know how it goes when I actually get them.. LOL...

Dont Get

Hey I just got my gauges and found the tach and speedo to be way to small to fit in the stock bezel. I am ordering 5 in. gauges to replace the tach and speedo I originally ordered.. Just wanted to give you a heads up..

Well, I had intentions of running one of ryokens custom dashs..hopefully...If not, I`ll run a stocker. Thanks for the heads up!
