Whats involved in swapping out a sm465 to either a n4500 or a 700r4?
like will all the manual components bolt up to a nv4500?

If i swapped a 700r4 in, would it only be making sure the t-case adapter is right and getting the right shifter?

Went the other way, but ya column or floor shifter (lots of aftermarket for those though if you don't want to search the pick n pull), tcase adapter, probably get rid of the clutch pedal if you want.

Only other thing I can think of is the wiring harness for the 700 was different than the SM465 but you'd just have to splice the wires.

Also the hookup for the TV/detent cable.

Not sure about the NV4500...

Ya I think that's all it is...

4pin sucker that I tossed into the garbage when I put the 465 in. I didn't actually bother to trace the wires, but now that you mention it I bet the Calgary police would love it if I had backup lights hehe

If you go to a 700 you will have to do something with the tcase.

I believe with the SM465 to NV series you use the flywheel that matches the block then the clutch disk/pressure plate that matches the trans.

Also you would need the correct slave cylinder for the NV series.

SM and NV bellhousings are not swapable. (without custom effort)

this is all hypothetical. Just a truck im looking at a 465 and id like to get OD in there somehow. Seems neither is really plug and play. But probably could be done fairly cheap.

Nothing is really cheap. Need to know the year of the vehicle you are talking about to know what would be involved in swapping the trans. 465 before 1985 has 10 spline short output, 465 after that has a 32 spline long output. That is needed to know what t-cases will work with whatever.

700R4 needs TCC wired up, which isn't real complex, but it is wiring, or modifying the trans to do it mechanically. 700's don't like heat, not addressing the TCC issue increases fluid temps.

Could you ID the spline count on a SM465 based on if it has a NP205 or NP208 T-case?

The flywheel definitely has to match the block, but wouldn't the pressure plate have to match the flywheel for diameter/bolt pattern? The clutch disk would have to match the input shaft of the trans and be a close enough diameter to work with the flywheel/pp.

Going to a 700 would be easy enough; flywheel/flexplate whatever it's called in the AT world would have to match the block as well as the tc, but it was all available on the 350s.

You'd probably want to get the NV specific master cylinder too, no? I'm thinking fluid volume and pressure, not sure if they're variable enough to make a difference or not.

700 would probably be easiest/cheapest just because it was offered with the 350s. The NV4500 although I'd love to have one myself would probably cause the most pain/expense...

208 means it's a 32 spline 465.
You will need a 27 spline input for the 208 to mate to a 700 plus that adapter.
I have both in case you need to.

Good to know i have options, im going to look at the truck this weekend, and it sounds promising. I will let you know if i am interested. thanks for the help :thumb:

Technically no. The 205 changed in 1985 for the different input shaft and different adapter/adapter bolt pattern. There might be other differences, but these are the easily seen ones once you know what the two versions look like.

465/208 will be 32 spline, a 465/205 will be either 10 or 32 spline. Bottom line, if you aren't looking at them, just knowing 465/205 won't tell you spline count. You have to know year, or the various other differences.

Well in his case since it is a 208, they were all 32 spline behind the sm465, but if it was a 205, and since 85 was the cut off year the 2 things that are dead give away are round bolt pattern on t case side, and hydro clutch with the 32 spline.
So a quick look still would identify it.

Chevy flywheels have had the same tooth count and diameter for ages, for LS swaps you can use the SM if you buy a LS block based HD truck flywheel and the old SM clutch bolts right on.

I'm sure you would want an NV specific master cylinder but if the existing one works, why bother. Granted I have not tried this (yet) so reader beware I guess.
