i got a 14 bolt semi float... i need to know if i take off my messed up yoke and put a good one on that i got laying around if it will tamper with my pinnion depth

uhm... pinnion bearing preload? i got to do some thing i got a tap broke off in a messed up hole in the current yoke... im bout to freaken weld the ujoint strap in place on that one hole

Best bet is to let someone with the right tools swap it out. I understand that it will cost more money to do so, but if you do it wrong it could cost you a whole lot more

Pinion bearing preload exists to make sure that the pinion bearings make full contact with their races.

Too little preload and the roller bearings will "skip" across the surface of the race and will wear out quickly and fail because all of the force is being applied to the small areas the roller bearing is contacting (think point load).

Too much preload makes too much friction which also leads to rapid pinion bearing failure.

The SF 14 bolt, like many differentials, uses a crush sleeve to set pinion bearing preload. Crush sleeves are one time use, period. If you need to replace the pinion seal or the yoke on a differential like this, you need to disassemble the entire differential and replace the crush sleeve. If you don't know how to do that, pay someone to do it or read here: http://pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Gear_Setup/
