Symptoms of a cracked head ****UPDATED*****

Re: Symptoms of a cracked head?

Sometimes it can be something you cant see. My original heads on the 305 made it ping no matter what I did to timing or gas. New heads and it went away ( only engine parts needed , ever ). I never lost coolant and gauge never showed overheating. When I looked at old heads with my buddy (saved em) several valves were discolored and I knew there were cracks. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Re: Symptoms of a cracked head?

When I cracked the head on my old 350, it was first noticed because of the steam coming out of the pass side exhaust. I then ran a compression check and then found I had little compression in #6. The spark plug was ultra clean on that cylinder as was the combustion chamber when I tore the head off. It was super easy to see the crack. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

I then bought a set of S/R Torquers! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: Symptoms of a cracked head?

Other symptoms could be white smoke, antifreeze in exaust, antifreeze in engine oil......I just helped a friend replace a cracked head, it was obvious which side it was by the anitfreeze running out of the spark plug hole when we pulled the plugs. He had lots of white smoke and anitfreeze literally running out the tailpipe but no antifreeze in the oil.

Man, is this confusing. Other than a few bubbles in the rad I have none of the above symptoms. Looks like I'm gonna have to pick up a test kit to check for exhaust gasses in the coolant.

Re: Symptoms of a cracked head?

Buy yourself a compression tester. They are great tools to have and tell you alot about your engine.

Re: Symptoms of a cracked head?

Bubble's in radiator? Blown head gasket, or cracked head, I would lean to the gasket side, since a cracked head won't allow that much volume of compression through to form bubble's. Also, once you decide to pull the head's, may as well do both while your'e in there, lay a straight edge on the block deck, they too warp, and act like a blown head gasket. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Symptoms of a cracked head?

No shite, brother........I haven't had this much "vehicular stress" in a while. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm going to a local shop in about 1/2 an hour to get the coolant checked for exhaust gasses. I'll report back in then.

****UPDATE*****

Well, I just got back from the shop. There is NO sign of exhaust fumes in my coolant!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

My mechanic figures that the bubbles I'm seeing is actually foam caused by the stop leak I put in the rad about a month ago. I'm gonna drive the truck for a little while and see how things go. Thanks for all the help, brothers!!! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
