I bought AM Steel synthetic winch rope. Does it need to be wound onto the spool under a load like steel cable, or just giude it on tight and neat with hand tension?

It doesn't stretch so heavy hand tension is all that is needed. You will want at least a solid 8-10 wraps on the drum if you need to spool out the full length.

Cool, thanks for all the info. I installed the new rope and fairlead, and now my winch weighs 42 lbs. less. I have it on a multimont that goes front or rear, and I take it out when not wheeling, so moving it is now a one man job! I didn't even consider the weight benefit when I bought this stuff.
