I tried to search but go too much junk...

I know there are different height crossmembers for 1/2 & 3/4 vs 1 ton frames. Then differences between flat vs "W" shaped crossmembers before/after '85. There are also hole shape differences at the mounting bushings.

For K5's...

What about overall widths? My K5 frame ('87) flares out (gets wider) between the front & rear springs so I was wondering if a crossmember for a 700/208 might be wider than one for a 4spd app? I'm thinking specifically about the flat, pre '85 style.

My reason is my doubler, the crossmember from my K10 (straight frame) fits in the OE adapter location but isn't wide enough to use under the ORD adapter so before I start chopping up crossmembers I'm wondering if there's some out there that are already wide enough.

your frame must be tweeked then.

thay are the same width for all trucks not blazers

some frames when cross member is pulled bow in and some bow out.

My frame is not tweeked. 83-91 K5 frames are wider at the rear spring hangers than at the body mount under the front floorboards by design, they have a slight V shape to them.

Sorry, I just assumed folks would see the K5 description in my sig. :D

I just realized that yesterday when I pulled the body off the 81 frame.
At first I thought the rear portion narrowed out but then I measured the truck frame I had next to it and realized it was the K5 frame that widened between the axles, which meant the front hanger for the rear spring will not work for a shackle flip if used in the back.:doah:

Wrong, don't know when GM changed them but my 89 blazer frame is wider behind the front springs than the frame on my old 76 blazer.

If you read further he realized he made a mistake assuming it was a truck not a K5:thumb:

you guys have me confuzzed...why & how are the frames different? i put a 82 cab on a 75 k5 frame..it bolted right up..i am planning on building another & would like to know what these different are

I don't know about the early to mid 70's but I've found 3 different part numbers for frames - 78-80, 81-82 & 83-91 (source= Mitchell Collision Manual).

I know one of the changes was to accomodate the lowered floor pan for the rear seat, as well as, the typical 80/81 frame horn change. I believe the floor change coincides with the frame rails flaring out between the front and rear spring hangers.

I've got a bare '74 K5 frame in the shop. Need someone with a bare '80's frame so both can take pics of top view to show the differences.

I won't be able to get pics of mine yet since the shop is so full and cluttered. Maybe this spring or summer.

Mine is sitting on the ground next to a very tall truck, maybe I will take a pic today to show the flare in the middle.
