Newbie,
I have a question and if you all could help it would be nice. Anyway driving home from Bend OR my transmission started leaking. It was leaking out of a hose that is starped to the drivers side close to the shift linkage and is capped off. What is this hose and why would it leak. Oh yeah it only leaked when it was in overdrive.

Were you towing something? 700R4's don't like to run in Overdrive while carrying heavy loads. It makes them puke fluid out of the nearest opening.

No i wasn't towing anything. I was in 4wheel driver for about an hour then put it back into 2 wheel drive and 14 miles later it puked fluid out the hose on to the exhaust and caused smoke. The hose looks like some form of a by pass hose. Also i went over a snow coverd pass after all this and no other problems just when it was in 2 wheel drive in over drive at 65.

Hmm, 700R4's don't have a vent hose that comes up into the engine compartment. At least not in stock trim. However, GM trucks do have an axle vent tube that runs up the drivers side of the radiator support. Is this the tube that was leaking? Was there red ATF coming out of the tube or was it brown (and stinky!) gear lube? Could be that the front diff is overfilled.

Fill out your profile with tire size, gear ratio, stock etc.....

If you were in fact puking tranny fluid you might have over heated it. Does the tranny act ok now? Correct fluid level?

If it is overheated, it will fail sooner or later. If it was a BAD overheating you will be able to pull the pan and see clutch/band material settled at the bottom.

Ummm,..... dont want to step on any toe's here..... but 700R4's do have a vent. It is on the top of the case, and has a hose that runs up toward the engine. Sounds to me like you got it hot and it just got rid of some extra fluid.

1990 K5 4" lift, 33's, 3.73's Raptor Tranny and Velvet Rides....

Can you tell me more on your Raptor Tranny? Specs, $$, location of the Business?

I will be looking at trannies and have not heard of the Raptor.....

Hey Dave, The new Blazer is great. Im looking into some possible mods for more power.... maybe a cam... or chip for the computer.... but havnt decided yet...
The Raptor is a performance built tranny that will handle
600 H.P. The shop that builds them is in Louisianna, they cost $1500 and shipping for mine to California was another $125.00 So far i really like it, besides the piece of mind, the tranny shifts great. Its soft and comfy under normal driving, but if you put it in D or mash the gas, it shifts super quick and firm. <a target="_blank" href=http://www.transmissioncenter.net>www.transmissioncenter.net</a> Anyways.... talk to Don there...... and let him know i sent you... he will take care of you. Thanks for the help. I just buaght the truck about a month a go. It is all stock 31x10.5.15 i believe the person told me who i bought it from said is had 3.73 gears in it for part of the towing package.
Yes it was tranny fluid pinks in collor, and the level when the tranny is warm looks to be at the right place. It ran fine after that no nosies no slipping that i could tell.
Could running it in 4 wheel drive at 45 for about 25 miles have caused that??
I usally don't have my trucks in over drive while it is in 4 wheel drive so i don't think i did this time either.

All gear cases are vented. But the only 700R4 vents that I've seen were just a 1.5 inch plastic tube, sticking out of the top of the tranny. I've never seen one with a tube routed to the engine compartment, at least stock.

i bet it puked the fluid out the dipstick tube-

learned that lesson when i borrowed my girlfriend's dad's PRISTINE 84 k5 to tow our boat to austin and towed in OD.....

this was in '93.... did i mention his blazer was PERFECT? really. i've never to this day seen another one that was as nice as this one. we came home from school one weekend and he had traded it for a new cherokee. ii was disgusted....
 
Guy's thanks for all the input. The tube i am talking about starts some place in the middle top of the tranny to the back and is bolted in place to the bell houseing. This tube has what feels like a oneway valve (plunger) on top which was pushed up. Also tube this might be coming from my transfer case i could not see were it was connected do to being on top. Again this only happened for a short time and only in overdrive.

Pink in color??

If you don't know what tranny fluid is SUPPOSED to look like, go get a quart and compare. Pink fluid means there is water or coolant getting into the transmission, and you have either a leak that needs fixing somewhere, or went in water too deep : )

Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?
 
Oops sorry i guess i am a little color blind it is the same color as what is in the bottle.
Again thanks for all the help on this. I took it into the shop and had them look at it. They couldn't find anything wrong and suggested that the tranny fuild level was to full, also they highly suggest i get a tranny cooler. The tube i was speaking of is a breather tube somebody has installed to get it up higher on the truck so water wont get in as easy. At least that is what i am told.

Yes, if you've ever topped off an auto tranny up without letting it warm up fully like is always said, the fluid level raises quite a bit. If it was over full, and getting quite warm, that very well could have been the problem....
