I got a VDO tach yesterday, it is 0-8000 rpm. It has 5 wires. I can't find any instuctions on a 5 wire tach hook up. I also need to make sure it is set up for a v-8.

that doesn't show which wire color goes to which connection, the back of this tach doesn't look like that.

ok, well mt volt meter says white is power for the lights, black & blue is the grounds, so I imagine red is power, and green is tach. And the way I got it had switch #1 off, and 2 & 3 on, but the link says 1 & 2 on, and 3 off. what would happen if they are in the wrong positionand I start it?

look anything like this on back?

i may be wrong but if i remember right you should have a red power for lighting a green for the dwell side of your coil or dist. a brown for a ground i think the other wires are used only if you have a 4 or 6 cyl. maybe im wrong... good luck!

wire colors are

Blue- ohm meter shows is on the same circuit as blue, and on one side of bulb,
Black- assume they are both ground
White- other side of light
Green- assume it is tach lead
Red- assume it is power

Don't know what model, that sticker is the only thing on it.

If I remember correctly,

BLK & BLU are Ground
Red is +12V
White is +12V for the backlighting (I have it tied into the headlight switch)
Green is the tach signal from you distributor.

I could swear the wire that goes to the dizzy on my little aftermarket tach is green.

Red should be IGN/ON, White should be hooked into lights.

Where does the green wire hook to on the distributor? I have yet to look at a wiring diagram or anything.

Driver's side of the HEI dizzy where you can't see the terminal - can't miss it :D.

By the way, I'm running mine set up for a 4-cyl - that changes the display from a 0-8k to a 0-4k, and since I get nervous when a stock(-ish) V8 gets to 4k anyway, I'd rather have the scale in the range where it appears more useful. ;)

There'll be a place for it right next to where the batt. wire goes into the bottom of the dist. top. Confusing but it should say tach right next to batt. on the top ;)

I would imagine :

Green = tach terminal on your HEI

Red = 12 volt switched

Black = ground for tach circuit

Black = lighting ground

blue = dimmer circuit OR loop it back to red for light on all the time .

My Sun Tach works off my dimmer :thumb:
