tach question

how do i connect a tach on my 87 k5
is it the same way as the older types with a coil just connect to the negative on the coil or is there a special type

There will be a wire at the distributor just for that. Then ask you need is +12Vdc and a ground.

im asking cause there is a wire by the coil that goes to nothing but its from the harness

What Ready said...
There is a tach lead in the harness off the coil. Should be white lead if I remember right. Plug your signal lead into that.
Red- 12 volts
Black - ground
*Green - tach signal
*if you have an aftermarket tach lead should be green. Factory tach lead is brown
I put a factory tach in my '89 TBI Blazer

Good question.
Don't know much about vortec electrical but it must have a tach lead in the ignition system as all those trucks seem to have a tach. Coil pack lead?
Doesn't the computer tie into the tach for shift points?
It can't be that complicated. All you need is a signal. You could pull tach signal off the alternator if need be.
Somebody will jump with more vortex knowledge than me Im sure.

Needs some kind of filter because of the individual coil packs.
