Tail pan replacement

I what to get some ideas of how to replace the tail pan. I thought about some tube steel instead of the tail pan from LMC. Has anyone done this? Another question is if I need to remove the gas tank before welding in a new one?

I replaced mine a few years ago with one from JC Whitney. I cut the old one out with a saws-all and I unbolted the four rear body mounts and lifted the body up off the frame just enough to squeeze the new one in. PIA, but it worked out well in the end.

The hardest part was installing the tailgate and getting it aligned right.

Did you weld it back in? If you did, did you remove the gas tank?
