I finally popped my tailgate glass dragging something out of the cab. Shipping a new piece to the UK is going to bankrupt me so as a temporary measure need to put in some plexi... Please, anyone have some sort of template / dimensions? The idea of working away until I get a fit is somewhat depressing.

It's a 91 and I love it.

Getting glass shipped overseas is risky anyway not to metion the cost, i don't like shipping glass across the state! I'm sure someone has a piece of glass out and could trace around it and maybe ship you the template?? Shipping a piece of rolled up posterboard is way safer than glass. Good luck.....

yes and yes, that would be ideal... Thanks for the thoughts.

I'd repost this in the main Garage forum, perhaps the Lounge. More eyes to see it.

Thanks very much. As a side note, the main issue I'm having (in not having rear glass) is sucking exhaust into the cab. Wondered how people got around this? I turn my blower on...

Make sure you have no rust holes or other points under the vehicle where fumes can get into the cab.

How is/are your tailpipe(s) routed? They should be routed out behind one or both of your rear tires exiting 90 degrees out the side. Straight back will give issues with fumes in the cab if your rear gate is open.

All that said...you will still suck a bit in if you're driving it with no glass at all. The turbulence behind the vehicle will cycle some in. Mine does if I forget to put the glass up or mostly up.

Rust - what's that?

My pipe is straight out, had thought of taking it at 90 degrees but some guy who claimed to know something about aerodynamics said I'd suck it in anyway... Seems like he had a point. Still, am sure it's better than my current setup.

You're lucky if it's not rusty.

Yep, out the sides is the only way to go.

BTW, we're suckers for pictures of far off Blazers. Also interesting histories of how they got there, if you know.

I'm not sure you could use Plexi for the back window...it has a bow in the glass about midway. Maybe have a boat shop make you up some kind of temporary plastic sheeting to cover the hole? I'd hate to put snaps in it to attach it though....

I've done the plexi thing once with my first Blazer many years ago. It worked fine.

As for fumes, open the side windows a bit. This reduces the suction...

Good to hear someone's done it, had assumed the plexi would flex to suit.
Still looking for a template...

Thanks for the tip on the exhaust.

That isn't Southern Speed's old Blazer is it?

Guy was an active member on here until he had to sell it a few years ago.

Yep, great guy who did an amazing job on it. Hardly put a foot wrong in the time I've owned it.

Sweet. Glad to see it went to someone who cares about it and knows what it is.

Thing's got a bit of history on here.

So just a random question, but how hard is it to get parts? Even just regular maintenance items. Oil filters, fuel filters, air cleaners, spark plugs, etc.

Just an option:
There is a guy I deal with in Belgium who has a bunch of army trucks, esp. M1009 Blazers.
Won't be tinted but it'll fit.
I'll get his info if you want it.

Dear lord isnt gas like $5 or $6 a gal over there?? I thought I had heard that anyway. Bet you get all kinds of crazy looks driving that there, way cool man!!!:thumb:

Service parts easy to get hold of, everything else I ship from the US. Good thing is parts are cheap bad is the time it takes, shipping costs and the tax (20% this end).

As to fuel... try 8 dollars a gallon. I can squeeze about 110 litres in my tank. Coming on $250 to fill it up...

Ouch.

Ten years ago I was in Christchurch, NZ and spoke with a guy who owned a mom and pop autoparts store down there. Said about the same. General maintenance parts were easy to get as there was usually something else that was more "local" that they fit but as soon as they needed a specific part it was overseas order time.
He did say there was some place in the north island that specialized in US vehicles and their parts but their prices were so crazy he could usually order the stuff from the US for his customers, put his cut on it, pay the taxes, and still beat their prices.

Update -

Finally got round to making a temporary (plexiglass) fix. Took a while but it's in and it fits. Doesn't suffer for the lack of curve, just have to put a bit of pressure on it as rising to help it find its way...

When I have a moment I'll take it out and make a paper template, so in case anyone finds themselves in a similar position PM and I'll help.
