So the tailgate on my truck (84 K5) isn't the original tailgate. Thus, the key that unlocks my door will not unlock the tailgate roller handle thing. Anyone know if this handle free wheels when locked? Or is it just impossible to turn. Also does the same lock lock the tailgate itself? I have never had a blazer that the roller actually worked, hence the question.
Also, if it's not the original handle and I don't have the key to match it, any ideas on what I can do to make it usable?

when the gate is locked (on my 86 k5) the handle will just spin and spin without rolling the window down. when you turn the lock with the key, it will engage a into the whachamacallits that rolls down the window.

now if the window is down, you can lock the window down but the gate still opens. the lock is just to keep the window from going down not from opening the gate,

if you want to spend the time and money, lmc has lock cylinders for that and you can get a new cylinder and replace it.

Yea, I took the inner tailgate plate off, and I can push the window up and down. But when I pull the handle for the tailgate to open, it won't budge, and acts like it is locked. Are you saying you cannot lock the tailgate closed? This is what I get for always having crappy rusty trucks that I just take the tailgate off. I don't know what to do with one in semidecent shape...

IIRC mine wont lock............hmmm im sure you have tried this but push in on the tailgate when you pull on the inner handle. sometimes mine wont open if it has pressure against it so maybe thats how yours is.

i would go out and check but im at work :o

buffblazer is correct. the window crank does not in and of its self lock the tail gate. the window crank just free spins when "locked". When in the unlocked position the window crank will lock into the regulator and allow you to lower the window.

Now, all that being said there is a safety mechanism that will not allow you to open the tailgate unless the window has been lowered all the way. The window must be lowered the last half inch or so before the safety latch will release and allow you to lift the tailgate release and drop the gate.

If you look in the center of the tailgate twords the bottom you will see a lever that the window will push down when all the way down. that lever pulls down a bar that goes stright up to the tailgare release. that bar when pulled down should allow you to drop your tailgate.

I may have some photos from an old gate I striped down for parts. I will see if I can find them and post up the relivent ones.

Cheers,

Rufus

Very much help... Now if only I didn't have to go to work, I'd be bust fixing a tailgate. Oh well, gotta pay the bills and all...
