I've never had to do this before. All rotted at the rear where the tailgate bolts to the body. How difficult is this?

Not that bad. Just be sure to brace up everything and get width measurements or when your done the gaps can be off when you close the tailgate. Mine is now too close because I didn't brace it enough.

I thought i would be ok using the hardtop to hold the side in place. wish i had set the width better, the tailgate and bedsides will come together when I hit a bump.
I would also try to find a decent bed to cut my repair sections from. On the aftermarket repair panels, the ribs are not bent the same as the factory ones so some massaging was needed to make them line up for welding

I think the patch panels are stamped slightly larger,so they can be laid over the original floor, overlapping some of the original panel-if you go to butt weld them, then the "ribs" will be a bit too wide and tall, and need massaging,as you said...

I noticed the same thing with rockers--if you chop out all the original rocker, when using the "full" ones, and you butt weld them in.you usually have to take a 2x4 and hammer to the area under the door to allow it to close without dragging...because they are a bit "oversize" and made to slip over the original rusted panel..

I agree proper bracing is important, but often the truck has rusted so badly (on ones I've had up here in salt belt),that there isn't any structure left enough to brace, and your more or less left to "guess" where things used to be,and hope your guess is close enough...

Yeah, I did overlap a few inches so that would be it. For my misalignment I am wondering if I remove the side panels and add a tube to the bed and tie in to the rear body mount. If i could slot some plates and jack the sides out a bit to gain some gap. I have it worked out in my head just nothing done.
