I'm rebuilding my K5. Does anyone know if the tailgate on a 89 K5 similar to any chevy pick up tailgate? I'm exploring dumping my K5 tailgate and hard top for a soft top and pick style tailgate.

I think you have to change the latches to the pickup gate but yah the pickup gate works on a K5

If I'm correct the only Blazer tailgates that you could switch out with pickup ones would be the 68'-72's as their hinges are in the lower outside corners. On the 73 and up models the hinges for the Blazer's are mounting inboard close to the chassis rails plus the tailgates are of completely different construction. The Blazer tailgates are thick because of the internal rear window and the pickup tail gates are thin.

Options

Just thinking off the top of my head. I hate my tailgate, and the fact I have to replace the tailpan. Mine is electric and now will not go completely up. Just trying to get other options.

Any pick up gate will swap but , as stated, you'll need all of the truck hinge, latch & strap hardware/parts. I have a pick up gate on my '91 K5, everything was a direct bolt on.

At the moment it sits with no top at all but I bought a used soft top that I'll be putting on it at some point.

Here's a pic of mine, you can see everything lines up like it came on the truck.

Wow, so the K5 rear is exactly wide enough for a pick up tailgate. I would just have to rework the new tailgate hardware and it would fit. Cool, more options. I just don't know if a soft top would be a good thing up here during the winters.

The K5 tailgate is thicker, but the outside sheet metal lines up the same on both. The difference is made up for by different latches and hinges, as stated above.
