I need to replace the rear window crank on my tailgate of my 80 K5 Blazer. does any one know how to replace this item?

Yeah, it's a pain.:doah:

Take the inside of the tailgate off, take the window off its track, move the regulator to the "down" position, the window should still be "up" and sticking out (if you're lucky and could get the tailgate open, if not, duct tape) remove the bolts holding the crank on, replace and reverse the order of steps.

In HS, my "buddy" jumped on the back of my 81 and the only thing he could grab on to was the crank. POP! when I started to drive off.

Thank you I have been asking this question all day. I will try to do this tomorrow afternoon. I opened the rear panel of the tailgate and was not sure how to remove every thing. Thanks again.

Yeah, I can't remember the specifics, as it was prolly 6-7 years ago that I did that, but it was a pain, and I had the advantage of a junkyard 'gate to work on.:D

tomorrow will be the test. I will work on the Beast and get this thing fixed. Thanks for all the help. Talk to you later.

It's not really difficult, but be careful with the glass. We replaced the crank on our '76 and had everything put back together. My son closed the tailgate and the window broke (it was down). He didn't slam it or anything. The only thing I can figure is that the glass got brittle from bouncing around and being in the sun for 30+ years.

I 'fixed' my crank too. Took it all apart and off the truck, saw how it worked and what was broke, put it back on to see what location it had to be in to allow the hinged knob to pop back in the assembly when the window was up and down. Took it apart again and jb welded that sum biotch. It still goes up and down but you just can't lock it. Be prepared for rusted out tracks and broken plastic pieces. I have zip ties holding some of my old plastic together. Regrease everything too.

My guess as to why the glass broke when the gate was shut was because the glass comes very close to part of the wind up assembly and IIRC there is a piece that if installed backwards will rub the glass. I could see where a little knock from closing the gate could shatter it.

i did a ghetto fix years ago on mine. i just made my own crank out of wire conduit and a bolt and i keep it in the cab until i need it. just one option if you decide to get lazy or cheap.
