My power tailgate window has become painfully slow, and sometimes it won't move at all. So tonight I tore it all apart and it appears that the gearbox on the regulator-end of the cable is locked up.

I took the regulator out of the tailgate, and then I took the gearbox off the regulator. Shouldn't I be able to grab the gear with a pliers and turn it, or is there some sort of a release switch inside that is released only when the square cable is inserted? I guess I could figure that out myself by hooking the cable back up to it and spinning the motor-end of the cable with a drill.... now that I think about it. Might have to try that tomorrow.

LMC and ClassicParts don't seem to sell this gearbox. Any ideas where I might find a new one, or some slick way to revive my old one?

TIA!:thumb:

I'd try soaking it in solvent overnight...might be gummed up, some rust, etc. Then use the drill and cable gently up and down. Repeat if necessary. once it moves nicely, use some spray lithium grease on it. Might be all it needs, and if not it was F'd anyways.

Thanks Rene. Will do. Any particular solvent you'd recommend? I think the gearbox has a black plastic cover, IIRC. Or it could have just looked like black plastic because it was dirty as heck and covered in grease.

Awesome idea! Thanks Slave! Do you think it is safe to soak my cable in the diesel? I'd like to clean it up as well.

PS- I went out to the garage this morning to again look at the gearbox. It's an all metal case.

Gear box has been soaking in red since Monday evening. This morning I tried turning the gear on the gear box by hand, but no go, so I put it back in the fuel.

Will mess around with it some more this evening.

Tailgate

I'm having the same issues. I replaced all the parts in the tailgate except the glass and the gearbox. I couldn't find the gearbox anywhere. Unfortunately the gearbox burned out my new motor. I can't believe no one makes these little boxes.

I could not turn mine by hand. The drill motor was no big deal. Clean the entire thing while you have it out. I lube mine with gun oil. I think it is faster now than it was when it was new.

I just happen to have the one out of mine and it works. I swapped in manual stuff. PM me if you want it.
